Jane you are thinking of the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris. The first book is Dead Until Dark.
I was actually disappointed with the book because I was expecting a fantasy. IT IS NOT FANTASY IMO! It is set in two fictional, modern day cities. It's outlandish, sure, but I didn't see any fantasy.
Had I done my research and realized it was going to be Weird Fiction and not Fantasy (before I read it) I probably would've enjoyed it more.
I also wished there was more explanation on how the two cities got to the point they did... maybe there's a sequel in the works somewhere.
I liked all the characters - but I think Elend stands out the most for me. Maybe it was his affinity for reading at parties!
I finished Mistborn a couple of days ago and can't wait to read The Well of Ascension. I was actually surprised how much I liked it.
I loved watching Vin play the part of a royal. I think some of my favorite scenes where her friendly banter with Elend.
I am reading Gale Force by Rachel Caine. It's more UF than SF&F but a wonderful series, probably one of my favorites.
I've also just started Faerie Tale by Raymond Feist. A Fantasy/Horror story that caught my eye.
I listened to the audiobook of The Steel Remains. I'm thinking it wasn't the best book for an audiobook because I felt like I missed a lot of details.
Overall I enjoyed the book and the world that was created. I plan on reading the next in the series after I actually READ this one again to be sure I caught everything. I hate feeling lost in a story.
This was the first book I've read of Richard K. Morgan. I'm curious if his other books are the same.
Here's how it was described to me:
Paranormal Romance focuses on a couple just like in normal romances, it just has paranomal elements. There is ALWAYS a Happily Ever After (HEA) at the end where they end up together. The first 4 book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series are a perfect example. Man meets woman, man overcomes obstacles in relationship, love wins out. Classic.
Urban Fantasy is set in today's world (or close to it) with Fantasy elements. It can have vampires, fairies, weres, djinn - anything paranormal. Urban Fantasy can be FULL of sex but if the story is NOT about the relationship it is still Urban Fantasy. Anita Blake is a wonderful example of Urban Fantasy with lots of sex. The plot revolves around Anita's adventures, often times in the bedroom, but there is no HEA for any of the "couples" invovled. In fact, I believe since there is no couple it excludes it from being a romance.
I don't know what Paranormal Fantasy is. Sounds like something for me to go research out.
HA! Did you really just say Unfortunately and Vacation in the same sentence?!? I'm super jealous of the Italy part too. Have fun on your vacation.
Thanks for posting the order of the series - I would have read it out of order if you hadn't.
I love it when I find a group that inspires me to read new things - this group looks just like what I need right now! I'll be adding to my massive To-Read list & joining in on some of the great Group Reads you have coming up!
