Mary Ann -- I don't recall feeling the film indicated he lost his faith in his grief but will have to watch it again to assess that. The book he wrote about his marriage and the loss of Joy to her illness is certainly a strong one and quite obviously comes down to faith remains even through deep sorrow so I would wonder if that didn't come through in the film.
Perfect summation of the film. I think anyone who has truly read a great deal of Lewis could appreciate the pace and content of Shadowlands. I thought Winger and Hopkins were very good.
I have these on my computer but have to find time to squeeze in listening to them. The samll bit I sampled makes me want to listen right through -- if only time allowed.
Now I'm ready for the second film -- finished the book yesterday morning and read half of the next one in the evening. I'm looking forward to comparing this second film with the book definitely.
Interesting. I've only this morning picked up The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and re-read it in about two hours -- partially because I recently fell into watching the film though I had intended not to do so until I did a re-read. Anyway, I found myself pleasantly surprised at how faithful to the book they had made the film.
I've also seen the ads for the second film and plan to pick it up at the first opportunity. I have the book on the shelf by the chair to read tomorrow morning. It will be the first read for this one and for the remaining volumes as I got sidetracked after reading the first book many years ago. Didn't read these when I was a child so the viewpoint may put a twist on the series but I think I'll enjoy them. I'm a huge fan of Lewis other writings for adults certainly.
Ginnie wrote: "I just purchased a book that explores how wartime radio broadcasts by Lewis turned into Mere Christianity and set his face toward popular apologetics as his calling.

It's on my list already but likely from your info, Ginnie!

I have read widely C.S. Lewis works but only dabbled in the Narnia series which I plan to remedy this next year. I have after over a decade of "avoidance" of the sci-fi/fantasy aspects which seemed emphasized in Pullman's Dark Materials given in and taken my daughter's advice (she even bought me three different sets of the books over the years!) and read the Trilogy a few years ago -- I found nothing in Pullman's books which led me to reconsider what I have taken for many years from the writings of Lewis.
Both offer sustenance and food for thought and discussion of spiritual matters. I suppose that's all to say I'm coming down on Lauren's "take" on this.
I have not yet read the articles but have them bookmarked and will pay attention to the discussion. Glad to see some activity here.
Keith -- your comparison of choosing a favorite Lewis book to squashing mercury was perfect -- it's just that difficult.
Partial to A Grief Observed here, too and also Til We Have Faces continues to challenge me. It is now packed into a box as are most of my others of his and so will have to wait.
Skylar -- that is interesting -- thanks for mentioning it here.
I have some books and will see if I can scare up titles to add here for you, Heather. I have a lot of books packed in boxes right now though so unless I have a list, I'll not have access.
