I read A Rant of Ravens a long time ago and if I remember correctly I quite enjoyed it. Thanks for reminding me of this author, I will have to check her out again (probably from interlibrary loan) ;)

1357 Thanks everyone for the comments about Interlibrary loan. I haven't gone back through all the notes but I think at some point I did say that I do use interlibrary loan and they are great about getting books to me. In fact, our in person bookclub meets at the library and all the books we read we get through interlibrary loan. So, I hope that people don't think I don't appreciate our library and their services, I really do. I was just disappointed that when I went armed with a list and ready to start reading right then adn there, they didn't have a single one of those authors. Since then I have read several (where I have either bought the book or gotten it through interlibrary loan).

Yay libraries!

Melodie, you must read Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. It was better than Shanghai Girls. And Lisa writes mysteries too: Flower Net and The Interior

1357 Cozies are what I read in between my other reading which tends to be denser fiction. Some of my favourites of non-cozies are Suite Française an intense book set in France during WW2. amazing book and not my usual genre. The Echo Maker A Novel an incredible read that is an allegory for 9-11. Books by José Saramago and for light reading I recently really enjoyed books by Lisa See

1357 I added one for one of Kathy Brandt's Diving mysteries. Oh and I added one for one of the Gideon Oliver mysteries as well.

1357 Good idea. And you are right its easy to do.

1357 Next on my list are books 2 and 3 of Kathy Brandt's Underwater mysteries. Looking forward to them as soon as they get here.

To add to Betty's list of BC mystery authors:
Linda Bailey (but I am cheating a bit, she is a mystery writer for kids) but I love her books and they are set in varous parts of BC.
Eric Wilson (another mystery writer this time a bit older kids and his books are set often in BC but also in other parts of Canada).

Re Mystery writers from Washington State how about Aaron Elkins?

1357 I had to put a real basket case down for a bit because of some other obligations but started it for real yesterday and have to say that I am already on page 157! It sure starts with a bang and if it continues to be as good as it has been so far I will be picking up others from the series. Now back to work so that I can read some more later.

1357 About to start A Real Basket Case and am looking forward to it.

I will be tracking all of her books down. I have a friend who is a cruiser (sailor) every winter in the Caribbean and although this book didn't touch much on that, I loved the setting and could envision the lifestyle based on the photos and stories from my friend and her other sailing friends. (My sailing was limited to short winter races off the west coast of Canada so pretty bare bones (and cold) for me).

I am now starting A Real Basket Case by you know who. ;)

1357 I am currently reading and really enjoying Swimming with the Dead An Underwater Investigation. I will definitely be picking up more in this series. Thanks group for introducing me to her.

I forgot about this series and although I don't usually go into ghost stories, I love Jitty. Thanks for the reminder.

Violet:

I am sorry that the author responded that way about borrowing from a library. I will often check a book out of the library (especially if it is in a series) at first to see if I like the author, if I do, then I will go and buy books by that author and considering that you can buy softcover books for about the same price as a magazine I don't feel too bad but libraries are a great resource and I hope the authors prediction is not true.

I am currently reading the Tea Shop Mysteries by Laura Childs and unfortunately its not grabbing me. Will try Kathy Brandt next.

1357 I have now been able to get my hands on a book by one of the authors I was looking for by going to the library of Mom! ;)

And I will get our book club to make a donation to our library and maybe with some suggestions to go along with it!
Apr 03, 2009 04:42PM

1357 Thanks Amy:

My library is very good about bringing things in for me - I was just very surprised that they didn't have ANY of the authors I was looking for. I have actually had them acquire books before. Also, our bookclub meets at the library and we use interlibrary loan for that to keep our costs down and the library has been very supportive.

I love libraries and my experiences here in our small town have been wonderful - hence my surprise. ;)

I understand about budgets and I was thinking of posing to our bookclub that we give a donation to he library to say thank you for all of their support.

1357 Well, I am sad, I took my list of new (to me) cozy mystery authors to our library excited to expand my reading horizons and to my horror none of them were carried by my library.

Just so you know which ones had cuaght my eye from your descriptions, I was giong to check out Kathy Brandt, Laura Childs, Maddy Hunter, Beth Groundwater, India Ink, and Krista Davis. Can you believe not one was there??

Next stop is my bookstore but I can't afford many but I need something to tide me over until I can get one through interlibrary loan. Isn't it funny, I buy loads of books for friends and family but rarely for myself.

Has anyone else ever had difficulties getting their cozy mystery fix from their library?

I saw that HBO was premiering the no. 1 detective agency tonight. Unfortunately, we don't get it. Let me know what you thought of it if you get a chance to watch.

1357 Congratulations Beth. I will keep a lookout for your book and give it a go.
