If you don't mind something that veers a bit towards romance try Oh, Kentucky! and it's sequel Kentucky Home. As I said there's a romance element to it, but she does put a lot of history in the books as well - an Dan'l Boone.
A couple of favorites set in Old California are The Proud Breed by Celeste de Blasis and Calico Palace. Gwen Bristow also wrote Celia Garth that is set in Charlston during the American Revolution.
A couple of Anya Seton's books are set in America, The Winthrop Woman A Novel and My Theodosia.
I love tales from 19C India, MM Kaye being tops along with Zemindar by Valerie Fitzgerald and Olivia and Jaiby Rebecca Ryman.
@Megha, I would have been surprised beyond words if anyone else was willing to commit to one that size :)
I'll see what I can do about Guernsey. Someday I plan on reading it. I'm a mood reader - I'll have all my reads mapped out and then a new find comes along and upsets the entire applecart.
Well you might be sorry you asked.....
Midwife of the Blue Ridge
The Courtier's Secret (historical romance)
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir(probably not historical fiction though.
The King's Grace A Novel (library has on order, don't know when it will come in)
Wheel of Fortune
The Bronze Horseman
Figures in Silk
The Glass-Blowers (French revolution)
One book I am just finishing and will continue with Wheel of Fortune is Cashelmara. Set in 19C Ireland and America, its a big old fat multi-generational saga with a twist - the author parallels the lives of her characters with those of Edward I, II and III. Wheel of Fortune, although the story and characters are not related to Cashelmara (this one is set in Wales), continues the parallel with the story of Edward III, Richard II and on to Henry Bolingbroke.
Really really good book, I highly recommend it. Daphne Du Maurier is really great fun, you might want to consider some of her books.
I'd love to join in, but my library holds are taking over my life at the moment - so only if you pick something I've got on hold. I kind of follow my own reading path far from the madding crowds. However, if you pick something I've read I'll be more than happy to step in and speak my peace :)
