I have this one on my list for Santa. It seemed like one I would like to own so I could reread it occasionally. Glad to hear it lives up to its hype.
I also gave this lovely book 4 stars. This was a man I felt I wanted to meet when I was finished reading. I agree with Lisa that the environment was paramount in this story. Highly recommeded.
I just finished this over the weekend. I liked it, but liked Shadow of the Wind much better. This was fairly depressing and dark. The writing is excellent as usual, but I kept wanting something nice to happen to him. The ending fits the book and I think is supposed to be a fairly happy ending, but it left me feeling more sorry for him. I did like the atmosphere, but I think it was a bit unrelenting. For full disclosure, I am not usually a gothic fan, but he is such a good writer I keep at it.
I read this a few months ago and really liked it. I wasn't sure how much I was enjoying it while I was reading it, but afterward I realized what a great story. I won't spoil anything, but this is one that I may eventually reread (something I rarely do).
I just borrowed this from a friend last night and am starting it today. I know I am going to love it. (My friend hasn't even read her copy yet and is letting me borrow it-can you imagine?)
I just joined in July 2009, and have won one giveaway,
. I only received it last week, so I will be reading it soon. It looks excellent!
I was exploring Cafe Press, and most of the quotes listed above are already available on a large variety of items. I think Lisa's idea of using Bookmarks' own tag line would be great. I also second the book journal idea and they are one size fits all!
I just recently finished this. I was hoping for more because I did like House of Sand and Fog, but this was just okay. I think the author has spent a little time in strip clubs! I think the strength is in the characterization of the stripper, and I thought the mental processes of the 'kidnapper' were spot on. It really all made sense to him. Other than that, I can't really endorse it.

I had also heard some negative buzz, but ended up really enjoying this book. I hope Mr. Davidson doesn't take another 7 years to research his next book, I'm ready to read it now.
I just finished this last night. I agree with Jenn about this book. I found it slow at first, lots of business background and details; I almost put it down. I had to take a break from reading yesterday to cook dinner (darn family obligations:) and realized I was thinking about the book and couldn't wait to get back to it. Not sure exactly when the transition from not sure about staying with it to staying up until 2:30 to finish it happened, but what a good story.
I liked this one. It didn't turn out like I expected it to and I like when that happens. I will be curious to see what you think when you are finished. I have Last Night at the Lobster on my TBR list, too.
Stephanie, I love how this book got its title (one of my guilty pleasures - I enjoy clever and unusual titles). This one fits the bill. I think you and Lisa will like this one.
This book is beautifully written and translated from French. It seems to be a mini-philosophy course, as well as a great story. The main characters are especially well drawn, and the vocabulary is stellar. I gave this book 4 stars; I think you will like it.
Jenn, I just added The End of the Affair to my TBR shelf, too. The reviews on this are stellar. Thanks for the recommendation.
Betsy, The Sparrow has been one of my absolute favorites for years. Like you, I have found it has stayed with me. I love your list, I've read (and enjoyed)them all except Fountainhead, which is on my TBR list. Great topic, too!
I liked Olive Kitteridge, especially seeing Olive from each person's different viewpoint. I actually liked her first book better, Amy and Isabelle, but this was good.
