Library Fines (22 new)
5 days ago, 08:36AM

1320 Jess- :)

Let me just add a little more to this thread...
<rant>
1. The people in this discussion group have absolutely nothing, nada, zilch to do with the changes made by the library's administration in response to the rejection of the levy.
2. This is our place to come and relax- while there are several TRL employees in this group and we might bring up work occasionally because we're there all the time, we don't necessarily want to defend the decisions made by our upper management in our leisure time.
3. If you feel really strongly about this stuff, I would suggest that you come to a monthly board meeting and speak during the public comment period. That would have far more of an impact than complaining about fines on an online book message board.

1320 Mr, you're failing to take into account that the patron is ultimately responsible for returning items in a timely fashion. Return on time, no fees. It's a choice. I have lots of friends who are parents of young kids who get their stuff back or renewed in time no problem. It just needs to be made into a habit like anything else. I sympathize with what you're saying, but the library can't survive forever without incoming funds, and the levy didn't pass, so the money needs to come from somewhere. We were one of two remaining systems in Washington that didn't charge overdues. It was time. Feeding off of the patrons? That's kind of insulting, don't you think?

1320 PS- it will have been my birthday on the 5th, so this will sort of be like an extra birthday party for me too!

1320 Jackie, do you want me to put your actual address on the event, or call for directions, or... ?
7 days ago, 01:09PM

1320 Mmmkay, I'm going to go ahead and make an executive decision- book club at Jackie's on December 11th, 6:30pm, with an optional book/bottle exchange. Bring a potluck item if you'd like. Wurd.

1320 I love that idea, Kate.

1320 Okay, so the tally between here and facebook breaks down to...
Nov 20- 5
Nov 21- 3
Dec 11- 6
Dec 12- 5

So, I think we should go for December 11. Next question- do you all want to meet at Jackie's house, or somewhere else? Also, is anyone interested in doing a goofy white elephant exchange or something similar since we're meeting in December?

1320 Mr- that sucks that your fines were so profound. FYI, they really did what they could to get the word out- there were notices on the checkout slips for over three months, signs all over the library (which nobody ever reads), newspaper articles, stuff on the library's website, information on all telecirc emails (the emails you get when things are overdue and holds come in for you), and staff were talking about the fines to everyone they could for months. You must have slipped through the cracks somehow. Picture books are particularly challenging for fines because they are such a quick read, so people check a lot of them out at once. Make sure you sign up for the email notifications the next time you're at the library- they alert you three or four days before your book is due so that you can renew online or make sure to get the books back before the due date.

1320 If only everybody had your attitude! You're the ideal library patron.
13 days ago, 09:28PM

1320 Oh noes! This is getting complex. I think I'll try to pick the dates that the most people are able to go... I'll give it another day or two and then pick a day. I posted the dates on facebook for those too lazy to visit over here, too.

Jackie and Raina- beverages wherevah! QB makes a nice beverage, and the bar is sufficiently dark and soothing after the trauma of a Saturday shift...

1320 Thanks for being so willing to pay. You would not believe some people- it seems that the smaller the amount owed, the bigger the heaps of shit that are given to our circ staff.

1320 I've got fines too! I'm still under five bucks, though. I feel your pain. I hope you signed up for the pre-overdue notices via email? They have really been helping to keep me in line, and you can always try to renew at that point (two times, if nobody has the item requested).
14 days ago, 09:48PM

1320 Sorry, missed that Jackie! So, November 20, or December 11 or 12.
14 days ago, 06:41PM

1320 Sounds good, Kate. So it sounds like we're down to November 20 or 21, or December 11 or 12. I'll see who else responds in the next day or two and then arbitrarily make a decision.
15 days ago, 11:36AM

1320 Thanks, Jackie! We should go for a beverage after work next weekend.
15 days ago, 11:28AM

1320 So, it was gently suggested to me that I should get on the stick with planning the next book group session. Jackie, are you still offering your house as a place to hang out? Another option is A2, the new Cajun restaurant which is pretty awesome and has long picnic benches that we could stake out. Dates are going to start getting holiday sticky. These are the ones that work for me in November (which is half over) and December...
Saturday, November 14 (next Saturday!)
Friday, November 20
Saturday, November 21
Saturday, November 28 (this is right after Thanksgiving, but I'm not going anywhere for the weekend)
Friday, December 11
Saturday, December 12

What do your collective schedules look like? Discuss.

1320 Rats, just saw this! I wouldn't have been able to go anyhow. Did you go? How was it?
Sep 27, 2009 09:58AM

1320 Thanks for coming Maura! I'll be posting my report later on- if I miss anybody's books, please let me know. PS- feel free to go into the Oly Reads bookshelf after I add your books and rate the ones you talked about. It just occurred to me last night that it might be a good idea, since we don't always talk about books that we like! Also, I think next time I want to hear if anyone read anything that was recommended by someone at book club. I'm always fascinated by the way that a book recommendation migrates...

1320 MORE OPPENHEIMER!!!

Nope, no head count needed at the Fish. They wouldn't let me make reservations, so we're just going for it.
