I don't have Fallen yet, I'll have to get it since it's been on my TBR list forever. I'm reading
the last book in the Mistborn series. I'm finding out little pieces at a time, but usually this series kicks your butt toward the end of the book. I'm also reading
, AMAZING book so far. If you like the Hunger Games, I think you'll like this. In fact, I think I like it better, but we'll see how I feel when it's over. I am also listening to the
audiobook.
- The Maze Runner is supposed to be like the Hunger Games and Lost mixed together with Lord of the Flies. - Have you tried the Cirque du Freak books? I haven't read them, but lot of boys like them I hear.
- The Warrior Heir I hear are pretty good as well. I have them on my TBR list since I saw them at Costco.
I'm interested to see what others say since I'm looking for books for my nephew.
@ Terra, I found that Vampire Academy took quite a while for me to get into. Also, the second book is much better than the first, IMO.
^^ Really, that stinks. It's only like $9.99 US on amazon.com, would it be worth it to have it shipped?
The thing about Morganville is that it's hard to explain. It never comes out very well when I try to do so. I will say that I love the books, and even more important is that I adore the characters. I feel like they have become family, or like I'm reading about real people. I think the friendship and bond between the main 4 characters in the series is what draws me in so much.
I am really loving it. The mythology Melissa creates is fresh and very creative. The way things unfold with it is right up my alley. I can't really explain much about it without giving it away. I think the characters are great and easy to relate to. At first it was kind of annoying with all the fashion talk (you can tell she has experience in writing about it), not that there's anything wrong with it, but I'd rather have my pages filled with plot. It does start to blend into the story well. It becomes expected and I find myself sometimes looking forward to it (especially before a special occasion).
I have been reading The Blue Blood Series, but I don't have the third book yet, so I started reading
. It's pretty good. You have to have a sense of humour I think to enjoy it.
Yeah, I have to agree about the Morganville Vampires. I LOVE them. I would put them above Vampire Academy.
I'm also reading the Morganville Vampire books. I just started Lord of Misrule. The last one, Feast of Fools, was amazing!
^^I thought that as well at first, but when I originally bought Twilight the recommended reading age was 9-12. Some childrens lit such as Percy Jackson and Harry Potter, is 7-9. Another example is the House Of Night series, it is rated for 10-12 year olds. I seem to find that a lot lately, where teen books are rated for tweens. I also think our ratings are different here compared to the U.S.. I know our movies are more lenient, why not our books too. Also, when I think about it, there are some childrens books that have the same growth and character "coming of age" properties that YA does. It's very hard to draw the line sometimes. It seems to get blurred quite a bit.
I agree that it is all aspects of the characters coming of age, the journey one makes learning about themselves, the way the world really works, heartbreak and love, etc, that makes a book YA.Sometimes I wish YA was broken into 2 smaller categories, 9-13 and 14 and up. Or something similar. There are a lot of YA books that are for 9 and up and some are definitely not for 9 year olds and maybe not even 13 year olds. Not that ages really matter in actuality since all children are at different levels (not reading levels). I buy books for my nieces and nephews. For one of my nieces I bought her Twilight (with my sisters permission) when she was almost 10. For another niece I wouldn't even consider it even though she is 14. She has a more sheltered life and is terrified of vampires. There are some books that I would never buy for any of them unless they were 16 and older (such as the House of Night series, but that's only going buy what I'm told as I haven't read them yet). Personally I think most teens would already know about this stuff, but that doesn't mean I necessarily want to throw it in their face either. On the other hand some series can open a door to have discussions about sex and relationships. I think the Twilight series is great for this. It is very tame, but can lead to a great conversation between a young daughter and her mother about these things.
One other thing I want to say is that I believe it is every parents responsibility to read the books their children are reading, especially in the YA genre. Then as a parent they can sensor if they wish, but more importantly (IMO) they will know where their teen is in their own life's journey by having these discussions about morality, sexuality, drugs, etc...
^^I meant to read TTW before the movie, but I changed my mind so I don't pick apart the movie.I only have 1/4 left in the first Maximum Ride book. Lots of action in it, no romance yet though(I suspect something of a couple characters, but it's not talked about yet).
Just finished Evermore last night and I'm not sure what I thought of it. I liked it, but something just didn't work for me. I didn't feel a spark between Ever and Damen. Finished all of the Vampire Academy books that are out so far and I LOVED them. Only a couple weeks and I can read the 4th!!!
I started listening to Poison Study today. since my book stores don't have them in, I downloaded the audiobook (don't know what I'd do without audible). I also just picked up Lament The Faerie Queen's Deception, so far so good.
Finished Wicked Lovely. It was pretty good. I liked having a human to lust after for a change, tehehehe.I'm just starting One Foot in the Grave, but it's definitely not YA.
Yeah Katie, I think they get better as they go. Seriously, I couldn't sleep last night after I finished the third one at 3 am. I would definitely recommend them.

I'm going to answer # 2 first - I haven't even come close to reading all of the vampire books out there, but Ive read a few. I used to like Anne Rice a lot, but when I tried to read The Vampire Chronicles as I got older I found I wasn't as into them anymore. As I keep reading I find just like anything some are good, some are bad. Also I'm learning you cant judge a series by it's first book. Lately I've been finding they are the weakest in the series.
# 1 - I will have to say definitely The Mortal Instruments series. Even though it isn't strictly a vamp series, it has that magical way of pulling you into the story. It is by far one of my favorite series to date.
I have to agree with Arlene about the Vampire Academy. I just finished the third book in the series and wow! That one really put me on a roller coaster ride. I have to admit, I only rated the first in the series a 3, but I think it's because it was kind of confusing at first and it took a while for the characters to get built up. I am now eagerly awaiting the fourth in the series which comes out at the end of the month.
I rarely borrow a book, and if I really like it (or it's part of a series) I buy it anyway. I get good use out of my iRewards card! Sometimes I will buy them used too. Unless it's a favorite it doesn't bother me. I also love audiobooks so I can listen while I clean the house, drive, or go to sleep. www.audible.com is great!

I finished The Hunger Games and it was very good. I can't wait till the next one is out, it sounds great. I started the first book in Vampire Academy. I'm about halfway finished. So far it reminds me a lot of Gossip Girl, but with vampires.
