I use a Palm Treo and have really enjoyed it.
The screen is small, but you can pick what size your text is still. The typical 300 page book is about 1300 pages on my phone.
There's the backlight so you can read in the sun.
My only complaint is you can't read .lit because there is no Microsoft EReader for Palm and will never be. I just avoid .lit and instead go for Mobipocket instead.
I haven't used the Blackberry but I have also heard that it is good for reading as well.

There are actually lots of books on GoodReads for free. You can find a list of them here:

There isn't any way to sort or search for the free ebooks but GoodReads gets them from FeedBooks. I've found alot of short stories & other ebooks here that have been very interesting & you can sort by most recent or most popular.
I'm starting Dead and Gone. I'm very excited to read it.
Unfortunately, I didn't work it into any of the challenges this month. :(

4/30 Update... How sad - only a couple more hours and I don't think I'm going to make it. Oh well - 9 1/2 books in April is OK with me :)

okay... just tried it... doesn't work - Sorry for the bad info.
It works on unprotected .prc files I've created from different work related manuals I like to carry around but not on protected .prc files - like your books will be.
I usually convert to mobipocket so I haven't tried it yet - but ICE Book Reader should be able to convert the .prc file into html/txt/doc with no problems.

I just finished a book that takes place in Illinois - it's A Long Way From Chicago. It's a Newbery Award Winner & is about a couple of kids that spend a week with their grandma each month. A sweet read (and short).
