I'm a fan of his from way back and I've loved that he has started branching out with different countries on his show for the past few years.
I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying it. "Political act" isn't what one first thinks of in regards to travel and I'm sure his views will help some people to think in a broader perspective.

I loved The Road to McCarthy as well. After reading both books within a short amount of time and eagerly wanting more, I was saddened to hear of his untimely passing. He really had a wonderful voice.
It's great to get your 2 cents on the Bill Bryson discussion as well!
A long while ago before he was so well known I read a Bryson book about Europe. I found him to be off-putting and very snobbish. After he became so popular, I've often wondered if I should give him another go. I am envious that there are so many of his books to choose from! Anyway, I've always really liked Tim Cahill. He has quite a selection of short stories, from ridiculous to chilling.
Ireland is my favorite place to read about and I'm adding all of the suggested books to my list. Somewhat on the lighter side, my pick is McCarthy's Bar by Pete McCarthy. He made me completely fall in love with a country without ever even visiting.
