Do you ever read in patterns? What I mean is, do you read a book and get so into it that you now must read everything you can get your hands on by the same author? Or maybe it's the story you dig and now must find every book on Anne Boleyn you can paw up?That's a very good question. After I read Zafon's The Shadow of the Wind, I've been reading a number of other books that are set in early 20th century Spain. And I don't know when this started but I've also been reading a lot of novels that are set in the 1930s/during WW2 (i.e. McEwan's Atonement, Samson's Winter in Madrid, Silva's The Unlikely Spy, etc.). I guess I just gravitate to that time period, lol
I'm finishing up Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring. It's been a year since I've read it; it's nice to slip back to Middle Earth every now and then =)
Christy wrote: "Ohh, Li... Will you let me know what you think about The Independence of Miss Mary Bennet? I so want to read it!"Sure! It might be a while until I get around to it (I think I'll be taking it with me when I move into residence in a couple of weeks) but I'll be sure to let you know once I get around to it =)
I bought the following books today:- The Time Traveler's Wife
- The Independence of Miss Mary Bennet
Am looking forward to reading both! =D
Bought the following books this week:- Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows's The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
- Diane Setterfield's The Thirteenth Tale
Here are my shelves; my books are a bit all over the place thanks to all the books I've accumulated over the years. These photos were taken a few months ago so the arrangement now is a bit different, lol:- My main bookcase with almost all my fiction and manga and some textbooks; there's also books behind those books btw, lol---the bookcase has very deep shelves. Now I also have books on top of the shelf, LOL.
- One of my shelves on my desk featuring nonfiction (Russian history, British history, etc.)
- My other shelf on my desk with a mix of nonfiction and fiction.
I also have another row of books below the desk shelves but it's a bit of a mess at the moment with my laptop in front of them.
I'm currently reading C.J. Sansom's Winter in Madrid. I really like it so far, I'm glad I picked it up =)
I am currently reading:- David Anthony Durham's Acacia Book One The War with the Mein
- Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre (re-read)
- Federico Garcia Lorca's Selected Verse Revised Edition (re-read)
=)
I'm currently reading David Rotenberg's Shanghai. It's okay but it does shift a lot between characters, making it a bit confusing =S
Books I bought this week (and I was at the bookstore twice this week):- Frommer's Europe by Rail (guess this counts?)
- Anna Gavalda's Ensemble, C'Est Tout
- Daniel Silva's The Messenger
I also bought two different formats of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and Northanger Abbey for travel and whatnot =)
A couple of the books listed are on my TBR list but yeah, here's my results:Children = 7
Classics = 9
History = 1.5 (I read Fukuyama's article on the end of history; not enough Russian history on the list IMO, lol)
Memoirs = 0
Modern = 4
Sci-fi = 2
Thrillers = 0
Travel = 0
Books I bought this week:- Jane Austen's Lady Susan, The Watsons, Sanditon
- Enrique Joven's The Book of God and Physics A Novel of the Voynich Mystery
I also have a gift certificate so that means more books! LOL xD
I started reading Anna Gavalda's Hunting and Gathering yesterday and am absolutely enjoying it so far =DMary wrote: "Hi Li. I've read "The Bell Jar." I was interested in her life. There are journals that her family published after she died. They are so sad and depressing. Her husband was such a jerk and didn't do..."
I can only imagine; I've always heard of Sylvia Plath and knew of her life story but I never studied her in school nor got around to any of her works until now. Thanks for the suggestion! I'll check out her journals some time (after I tackle my TBR list, lol) =)
Welcome to the group Mel & Brenda! =)Jill wrote: "Welcome Li. We're glad you came out of the lurking shadows.
I read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Thought it was funny. Movie was so so for me. why in the world this makes these All..."
Thanks for the welcome! I'm quite glad I never checked out the movie; I heard so-so reviews about it and figured it best to check out the book first =)
I've started reading Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar (it's pretty interesting so far, I like Plath's prose) last night after finishing Dickens's Our Mutual Friend (which was very good), J.R.R. Tolkien's The Legend of Sigurd & Gudrún and will probably start Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings in a little while xD
Shelli, that's sort of been me as well, only it's been like this since joining GoodReads! So many books, so little time, lol xD
The last books I bought were:- Charles Dickens's Our Mutual Friend
- Chris Evans's A Darkness Forged in Fire
- The Voyages of Sindbad (Penguin Epics)
- Apollonius's Jason and the Golden Fleece (Penguin Epics)
- Siegfried's Murder (Penguin Epics)
(And now I am trying as hard as I can to stay away from the bookstore, lol)
Thanks for the kind welcomes! =)Mary -- Books to be read on my shelf...I have two of Elizabeth Gaskell's books waiting for me (Cranford and Wives and Daughters), Adams's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Anna Gavalda's Hunting and Gathering (which I think I'm going to read next, been meaning to read it for a very long time now) and so forth. I believe I counted 19 last time I checked my TBR stack *blushes*
