Of those mentioned, my votes would go to:
Three by Ted Dekker (the description hooked me!)
Olive Kitteredge
The Graveyard Book
In the scary October (and Gaiman) theme, I'd propose:
Good Omens: The Nice Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter Witch by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman
Hi Christy - I love listening to audiobooks but found that listening to classics was almost impossible. Maybe it's all of the descriptive detail? I don't know. Try a fast thriller or something else that's current and see if you have a different experience. Good luck! Connie
Saw District 9 - way too gory and violent for me. Others in the theater loved it though - it got a round of applause at the end.
I thought Devil in the White City was terrific also. (I'm sure being from Chicago and visiting some of the Fair sites helped) Not so fond of his next book, Thunderstruck though -
Thanks for the update. I love the library check out idea. Wish they would figure out a way to do that for Kindle, but Amazon would probably never go for it.
Very funny Mary! Your TBR list must be reaching 1000 soon! (mine's catching up too!))
He mentioned that there currently are 130 schools built now - about 40 of which are in Afghanistan, the rest in Pakistan and he mentioned here also that none of the schools had been harmed in any military action.
Lorna - The author is Charlaine Harris. Just look up her name with "Sookie Stackhouse" or "southern vampire" series and you should be able to find them.
I love the TV series and, except for the "orgy" scene, think the sex parts are pretty well done. What gets me is the extremely violent and gory scenes. For those who saw it most recently - The bloody heart in the souffle scene - Disgusting!!!!!
Mary - I wonder about that timing thing also. In another book club challenge, readers were asked to go back and read a book they were assigned back in school and see if their opinion of the book changed. I liked the idea, but it's difficult to get myself excited about re-reading a book I didn't like in the first place.
As I just mentioned in another discussion, one of the best things about this group is that everyone is welcome to express their opinions - whatever they may be - here without fear of receiving hurtful or personal attacking responses.
Kim - I don't think you are in the minority. I feel like I hear more people disliking the book than liking it.
Regardless, one thing I love about this book group is that completely differing opinions can be expressed here without the discussions devolving into hurtful or personal attacks. I think the "40-somethings" who started this group do a terrific job of keeping things respectful and grounded and setting a great example for the rest of us.
Hi Jolie! I work and live in Chicago also. And one of my nicest sisters in law shares your beautiful name! Glad to see you here and looking forward to reading your reviews - Connie
I disagree. Just because she ended up with a man doesn't mean she didn't learn something about herself over the course of her experiences chronicled in the book. One thing I took away from the book was that she certainly DID realize that she had relied on men way too much in her life - which was what made her Italy, India, Indonesia experiences so much more profound for her. If anything, I assume her current relationship is that much more meaningful for the personal growth she experienced and expressed clearly in the book. She should not have to foresake love entirely just because she was too dependent on men in the past.
Just saw Greg Mortensen speak tonight for close to two hours at Loyola U Chicago. He was wonderful! Gave a recap of the book and then discussed the progress with the schools in Pakistan and Afganistan since its publication. I love his perspective of "promoting peace" as opposed to "fighting terrorism" (which I did not realize was part of the original title of the hardcover version insisted upon by his publishers). Very moving and inspirational.
Mary - I agree. Did you see that Leo is starring in an upcoming movie - Shutter Island? I just got the book from my in-laws and am looking forward to reading it before the movie comes out.

Thanks Jennie. It sounds like a must read for this series!
