12544 Mary,

we are still in august, at least in Germany :-)

You have to wait another four weeks for the book

Sarah,

the book was published in Britain, not the US...

I miss some german authors as well, e.g. Brecht, Fontane, Lessing or Schiller. I doubt that the "perfect" list what a person should read exists.

12544 I am interested as well

12544 I loved the book. Interesting story, well written. Usualy I am not into this kind of books but this one was great. Glad that I read it.

This first line you mentioned, "tonight I die and my life begins" is the beginning of the letter Hannah wrote for Grace, not the one for Emmeline. It is the beginning of the letter at the end of the book and it is the one Hannah wrote in shorthand. Too bad that Grace never had the courage to tell Hannah about not attending this school.

I hope your back will be better soon.

12544 Hannah didn't know that Grace couldn't read or write shorthand. All those years Hannah believed that Grace attended the school of Miss... (don't remember the name) and that she learned short hand like she did. Grace never told her that she just stood there to unwrap the book she had bought. She did write the letter on purpoe in shorthand but only because she wanted to make sure that no one else beside her and Grace could read it.

12544 I started the book this morning and find it interesting. I got to page 69 and will continue later on. Looking forward to it

12544 I hadn't planned to buy anything but I couldn't resist:

Frauen erobern die Welt Abenteuer - Reisen - Expeditonen, Unterwegs auf fernen Kontinenten by Alexandra Lapierre. The english edition should be Women Travelers, Adventurers, and Trailblazers 1850-1950. I just had to have the book. Sounds more than interesting

12544 Hi KimK,

thanks for the great link. Most of the mentioned books are unknown to me but I bet I will find some interesting ones.

12544 Does the seats have arm rests????

Gee, I really should go to a movie theater from time to time. Last movie to see there was ... I can't remember.

12544 Mary,

the only reason why I finished the book was the hope that it gets better. Well, it didn't get better but your post about Oscar's disorder explains a lot.

12544 I add SABRINA to the list. The original one from 1954 with Humphrey Bogart and Audrey Hepburn. I like the remake with Harrison Ford and Julia Ormond as well but the origianl one is still better.

12544 Mary,

I read the book in May and hated it. Maybe it was the writing style, I am not sure. I did finish it but think it was a waste of time.

Why I read it? Because everyone else loves it and I thought if it is that good I should read it as well. My mistake.

12544 I received the book two days ago and will read it.
Travelling (5 new)

12544 It depends on where I am going. When we go to Gran Canaria I usually take for a two weeks trip up to 6 books with me because there I mainly get spanish books and I don't speak it. They do offer english and german books but far to expensive for my feeling.
When we go to the US I usually take one with me and buy the rest during my vacation. One can never know what you are up for.

Have a great time in NYC (they have more than enough good book stores to buy a book or two)

12544 My latest splurge just arrived:

- Das geheime Spiel (The House at Riverton) by Kate Morton
- Die achte Sünde (The 8th Sin) by Philipp Vandenberg
- Das Rätsel der Templer (The Mystery of the Templar) by Martina André

One question regarding the book by Kate Morton: which is the original title???? I thought it would be The House at Riverton but my german edition said the original title is THE SHIFTING FOG. Can anyone explain to me why books even in differnt english speaking nations have different titles? To me it is already irretating that in Germany english titles are translated into other english titles (i.e. CONTEST by Matthew Reilly got the german title SHOWDOWN) but how come that books in the USA have different titles than in Australia???

12544 It would be nice to have such a device for vacation because then I no longer have to take all those heavy books with me. But for every day? No, no, no. I prefer a real book. They look so good on all those shelves in our house. And I love to smell old books. Or to just thump through a book.
I could imagine one for the newspaper but then we would need two because my other half usually reads the paper at the same time.
Audio books? As a kid I had some but these days I no longer listen to them. I prefer to listen to music when I am busy with household chores or when I am driving somewhere.

12544 Since I came up with this list, here are my reading results:

Children - 4
Classics - 2
History - 0
Memoirs - 2
Modern - 3
SciFi - 1
Thrillers - 0
Travel - 1

I have several on my TBR but I can say that more than 50% of the books or authors are unknown to me.

12544 I am looking forward to continue with The Red Leather Diary Reclaiming a Life Through the Pages of a Lost Journal tonight.

Three days ago I ordered 3 books. They should arrive by tomorrow.

My last trip to the library was in May. I only use the library for books I need for my studies. I really can't remember when I last borrowed a novel from the library. Maybe 10 years ago or so. I really can't tell you.
