1225 Hi all,

A friend recommended this to me,The Frg and the scorpion, I have finisged it last week.(http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/61466...) it's a crime action novel but with an interesting style. My mate said.."imagine a Guy Ritchie gangster film as a book". I took a punt on it and it is fantastic... reads very much like afilm, but retains some great literary poise. Wickedly amusing and the characters and dialogue are some of the best i have read. I can't find anything else from the author though....

1225 Graphic novels can be immensly compelling - one of the most astonishing books in last thrity years is Art Spieglemans 'MAUS' about Jewish survival of the holocaust. The sequel and the original are now bound up in a single additon. It's a stunningly moving piece of writing (and drawing)

1225 Then i suggest you read James Ellroy - but not the LA Quartet. Attack his historically set American Tabloid and The Cold Six Thousand (A third in the trilogy is overdue. Stunning, pared down writing style, tense and very very gritty. If you like detail and lot of fantastic characterisation then you'll love these two.

1225 Harlon Coben's Tell No One is a good but i think his 'The Woods' is one of the best slow reveal thrillers written for sometime. His latest 'Hold Tight' was frankly, a bit pants.

1225 Historical fiction is not usually my bag - but an old friend of my fathers writes in this genre - his name is Eddie Crockett (Edward J Crockett) his book "Condottierre" is published by Birlinn and is about an dEnglish Mercenary that became lord Protector of Sienna and Florence... its a really good read.
