Hi Wanda, I got caught up in the Rose of Sebastopol post and hadn't visited this discussion in a while. I haven't read Fire in the Blood. That sounds like a good plan for September. I will add the book to my TBR shelf so I don't forget. I was even more upset when I read that she had been dead for a while and her husband was stiil trying to have her released. I don't cry very often w/ books,( last time was The Book Thief) I did cry when I read this.
I wondered about Roses behavior with Mariella as well. I think Rose did not get much love from her mother and Mariella was so nice. There was a lot of passion displayed. Women were so repressed maybe they could only show enthusiam for anything to their friends/cousins. I wanted to know what was said to Mariella's mother about why they had to leave the estate and why her father was so angry. Did they know about the stepdad?
Wanda, I love it that's exactly what should happen. They also clean up the mess at the estate because the older brother dies. You have a wonderful way of describing the feeling of the 2nd half. I felt the same way.
***SPOILER ALERT*** I gave 4 stars to this book. I really enjoyed it. Some was predictable like the pervy stepfather. Some of the characters were irritating like the selfobsessed mother and Thewell. Even Rosa came of as very strange until the book came together much better in the second half. I also wanted to know if they (Thewell and Rosa) really did it or was it just a fever dream of his. I do not like hanging characters either.
I'm agreeing with Donna and Wanda. Not your typical romance novel. The nursing and surgical procedures seemed pretty accurate and horrific enough to be of the period. Also the way the ladies would arrive somewhere and be set up w/ housing and horses. That was very British Army to me.
***SPOILER ALERT***
Yes! I did not like Mariella at first either. Thewell was oily and false to me as well. I was proud of her when she stayed behind even when her parents demanded she return home. That was when I really started to love her. I had always heard of the Crimean War, but had never read about it in depth or really understood where it was. I have questions about the relations between some of the characters but I will ask later when more of us are done.
I gave the book 5 stars. She was a remarkable wordsmith and I'm sad she couldn't finish it. In her notes she says "Oh God a thousand page novel" I would have happily kept reading. I've read a lot of books about this war. This was one of the most touching.
Oh, it's heartbreaking. She has such a way with words and feelings. I love the nature aspects like Shannon said. The worst part is that she has no idea what is going to happen to her. She also makes you feel for both sides. The Germans are just doing their jobs, they are human too. The French are just trying to survive it, what can they do? Now, is it up to our imaginations how it ends?
Has anyone read her other book The Alchemists Daughter? I think I have but the review was vague, if it is the one I'm thinking it was a good story.
I just finished Storm in June. I'm really liking this book. The scene w/ Phillipe's death was shocking, I think the children could sense his contempt. I hope we hear more about the mistress who always seems to land on her feet.
Hi Jennie, There is a great series by Sarah Donati, Lake in the Clouds and a few more. It was wonderful and I'll probably read the series again. It has American and Native American history.
Wow, this is hard, I think Sea of Poppies sounds good, I ordered it from the library and I'm 6th in the queue. I also like the sound of Consider the Lily. I'll order that one too!
Wait for it to come out on DVD. I read the book and it wasn't that great, how can you be a financial expert and be so much in the hole? Like you said Kinsellas books are highly implausible.
I love my library! I always walk out of there w/ too many books, its kind of a work out to get them to the car. I was just there today, because of Goodreads, I ordered lots of books by my some of my favorite authors I had not read yet. I guess I got carried away, on the hold shelves was one paper wrapped book telling me to go to the circulation desk, imagine my surprise when the librarian brought me 20 books!
