I started reading The Whitest Wall by Jodee Kulp on the weekend and I'm about half way through. Found it a bit difficult to get into at the start but now finding it very good.
I'm now reading The Historian and hadn't realised it is a vampire book (didn't read the blurb on the back when I bought it, just heard it was worth reading lol), still enjoying it so far.
Kat/Kathy, just finished reading the Poe Shadow on the weekend and I loved it. But now I have a dilemma, do I read the Dante Club or the Last Dickens next? Which do you think?
I'm now starting on The Devil in the White City Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson, Lost Lives by David McKittrick and The Penguin Book of Welsh Short Stories edited by Alun Richards, all of which are from the Hay book stack.
Finished A Farther Shore Ireland's Long Road to Peace by Gerry Adams on the weekend and it must be the most biased book I've ever read in my entire life. It was interesting to see his perspective but my god that man lives in a serious bubble.
Hi Kathy, I haven't read any of his books yet. The Poe Shadow caught my attention as I'm a big Poe fan so thought I'd give it a try. Didn't manage to read any last night (got distracted arguing with Gerry Adams again lol) but I'm looking forward to getting stuck into it.
I'm now reading A Farther Shore Ireland's Long Road to Peace by Gerry Adams and although it's providing an interesting' insight into Sinn Fein and their role in the Troubles and the Peace Process I find myself arguing with the book a lot (out loud too) as he is very self-righteous and bigoted with the RUC and the Army coming across as the henchmen of Satan and Sinn Fein are the good guys who kept it going and got the Peace Process started, which lets face it is not entirely accurate. This is in stark contrast to some of the other autobiographies I've read, on both sides of the divide.
Also just started reading The Poe Shadow A Novel by Matthew Pearl, will report back when gotten further.
Now reading A Farther Shore Ireland's Long Road to Peace by Gerry Adams and The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown. Enjoying the second one so far and find myself arguing with the first a lot lol

It's a deal :)

Fabulous :-) is starting on the 1st Jan okay for you too, I don't mind starting it earlier/later if you want :-)
Oh dear, that's never a good thing.

Glad you enjoyed it too, yea he's definitely getting more and more unstable. I think it's so disturbing because he comes across so normal to start with. Can't wait to get stuck into it some more tonight.

So far yea, I'm just under halfway through and it is very good and much easier to read than I thought it was going to be. It started off very subtle only hinting at Bateman's 'other side' but it's coming to the fore more and more now. And the attention to detail as seen through Bateman's eyes just adds to his slightly disturbing character. I can see it getting better and better I have to say.
Have you read it?
Emma wrote: "I might start War and Peace too, I've had it for at least a decade... :)"
Yea go for it Emma, I'm saving mine for the new year so will start reading it on the 1st (yup I'm that sad I've planned when I'm going to start it lol). We can encourage each other to keep going with it when we struggle too if you want :-) it's always easier to keep going when someone else is motivating you too
Thanks Gilly and Mary, feeling better about giving it a go now, and I think I'll be sticking to the English version for the time being...but you never know!

Thanks for the link Cecily, it does sound really quite good. I'm certaintly going to keep a look out for it :-D
That is quite spooky actually!
Now I've heard in other book discussions that Don Quixote is quite heavy in the content too, but I think the person who read wasn't use to such text so that may have been it. I was looking out for a copy of it when I was in Hay on Wye (where I got W+P) but unfortunately I didn't find one. Will keep an eye out for it though, thanks for the recommendation :-)
Well I've recently read Cormac McCarthy's The Crossing which I struggled with as he had a lot of very descriptive text and One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, which took a bit of getting into. And I have read a few Dicken's books previously which I did enjoy and I've read Crime and Punishment too which I also did enjoy once I got the knack of it so I think W+P is the next step really. I'm sure I will enjoy it, I think it's just the psychological thing that its WAR AND PEACE (as it appears in my head lol), kind of like those childhood fears that you finally conquer when you're an adult if you see what I mean
Cecily wrote: "Sam, if you're "dreading" reading War and Peace, why are you going to, is it an assignment?"
Nah, it's just one of those books that in my head has become a huge epic that only really dedicated and clever people read, you know the type of one that when people say they've read it you just go WOW. And I figured it's time I challenged myself a bit more with what I read rather than just reading the same kind of books or 'easier' books all the time, you know expand my mind etc etc (strange I know...)
I'm reading Paisley From Demagogue to Democrat? which I've borrowed off my bf's mate and American Psycho, bit of a funny combo I know but there we are lol

I agree Jeannette, I've just got my own copy of War and Peace and it's going to be my personal book challenge of 2010, so maybe Pratchett is a bit of a come down after reading W+P especially more than once (I'm dreading trying it once!)
All I can say Mary is I'm very impressed :-)
