totally agree!
play.com i have found to be generally the cheapest place. everything is free delivery so you are not having to spend out on postage.
Went to see The Reader last night. Brilliant! Very thought provoking and has made me think about what I would do myself in certain situations.
easter themed book including christian fiction, a book with a storyline about sacrifice, or words such as easter, eggs, chocolate, bunny in the title.
I look after my books as if they are gold! I don't bend the spines. They are all on bookshelves in alphabetical order by surname. If people ask to borrow my books I have a moral dilemma because I just don't know what state they'll be in when I get them back - luckily people know what i'm like with my books now! My bookshelves are like my pictures on my wall. I like to sit there and just look at them.
One of my favourite books ever is Gentleman and Players by Joanne Harris. It's very different to her other books. It has a great twist and I didn't guess it at all. Doubly, trebly recommend it!
I have a book that is an American one and as C F S R says it flops open better and was much easier to read because of it!
paperback - can fit more on my bookshelf and they're cheaper. once i've got one type on my bookshelf i want to stick to that type so that it looks a bit more matching! i find hardbacks a bit heavy to hold too. I don't mind getting the larger paperbacks they bring out now but if it's part of a series i have to stick to the same editions throughout the series!
I watched Slumdog Millionaire on Friday night. It was the best film I've seen for a while. It was very clever. I loved the way that they told the main character's story of growing up in the Indian slums by using Who wants to be a millionaire questions. An original idea and it was excellent.
I am loving the Ikea bookshelves Ellie. We've got one opening the beginning of Feb. I can't wait!!! Will be getting at least one bookcase.
Alas I can't afford the place on my own and as Kipahni points out books aren't so good at paying rent! Maybe I could just tell me housemate that from now on she's gotta sleep on the settee - urm not sure that'll go down too well!
I have jsut had an email about a new bargain book website. It's based in the uk. I took a look and it seems really good. The prices are brilliant. Most of the books are under £5 with a lot only £1. They also gave me a code for free postage which is BAN209. I don't know if it's one that will only work for one person but it's worth trying out. The address is
www.bananas.co.uk
well at the moment i'll be ok. i'll be getting the bookshelf to go in the small space next to my bed in a few weeks (ikea is opening in my town beginning of feb!!). Once that's filled up I guess I will have to seriously think about the storage idea. I never reread books so it's not about keeping them for that. I just love having them. I guess like anything else people collect. I have them all in alphabetical order and i don't like bending the spines so that look nice!! Thanks for your ideas though!
My god I can't get rid of books!!!! I really can't! I keep them not because I'm going to read them again I just like the look of them!! I have about 600 or so at a guess but really you can't ask me to chuck?!?!
The time has finally come when I now have too many books! All the bookshelves I have are full up and I am also running out of space for bookshelves! I live in a rented house and am not able to put shelves up on the walls so have to buy bookcases. Does anyone have any ideas for space saving bookcases? I am going to buy two tall media storage towers and take out every other shelf so that the books can fit on. These will also be thin enough to fit between my bed and the wall behind my bedside table. Has anyone got any other ideas or know of any places that sell thin bookshelves? I did see one in IKEA but it was too long to fit in my car!!!
I think it can be true especially for people in what is seen as the 'better' classes. However there is a lot more emphasis nowadays on inclusion and everyone being able to access all services and employment.
It isn't only the women that have arranged marriages of course! The men also don't have any choice in who they are going to marry or know who it is. I think we often forget that and concentrate on how awful it must be for the woman to have arranged marriages. The men also have a lot of pressure to be 'successful'.
ewwww! I think they scented them though didn't they? I'm sure there were references in the book about Peony scenting her feet.
I have finished the book now and I think I felt that Lisa See had tried to fit in too many facts and information about all the rituals etc (very superstitious). I most enjoyed the parts where Peony's mother dies and they meet up and also when Ren marries his third wife. These were a lot more story bits rather than fact building!
