This brings back fond memories of trying to keep a straight face while opening presents. The times before gift cards. :)
My three cousins always pitch in for my husband and I's Christmas gifts. Since they know we are NASCAR fans, for the last several years, we both get something from them to do with Dale Jr.
This year:
My husband got a nice Dale Jr t-shirt and hat. Perfect size.
I got a pair of Dale Jr Men's Size XXL sleep-pants. May I point out that I wear Size M in Mens as long as they run small? These things were GIGANTIC! As a joke, my husband and I both got in them - at the same time - and there was still plenty of room left over.
I donated them to Goodwill. They didn't get a thank-you card like everyone else... I wasn't sure what to say: "thanks for the pants - can't wait to gain 200 pounds so I can wear them!"
85 pages in and I have to say that I am enjoying it. I love some of the little comments that Harker makes in his journal. I wish it would get back to his journal vs Lucy and Mina, but I assume that we are introduced to the ladies due to their part in the story later and also to build the suspense to know what happened to Harker.
I've had Dracula on my to-read shelf for awhile now. I'm so glad that TNBBC picked it for October so I could stop procrastinating and actually read it! :) It is sort-of sad that I've read tons of vampire books over the years and never picked this one up.
I just started chapter 3 and am having the same problem with the lengthy descriptions that a lot of people seem to be having with it. I find myself skimming and I force myself to go back and read the (never-ending) paragraph over again.
I'm a scaredy-cat so I'm hoping that this book doesn't give me nightmares! :)
I've never watched the Dracula with Keanu Reeves in it so I think that we'll rent it and watch it on Halloween. We have Van Helsing and both enjoy watching it (for different reasons: me, Hugh Jackman; husband, Kate Beckinsale in a corset).
I've recently cut down on the amount of groups that I am in. Here is my list:
The Next Best Book Club - Love it! This is my favorite group, but with all the new members and posts, it is hard for me to keep up.
SciFi and Fantasy Book Club - I don't think I've ever posted anything, but I like this group and can't make myself drop it.
Urban Fantasy - I co-moderate this group with Suzann.
Paranormal Romance - Because I used to read a lot of paranormal romance although I've recently been getting bored with it.
The Rory Gilmore Book Club - I never watched Gilmore Girls, but I like the group interaction. It is a fun, friendly group.
Sookie Stackhouse Book/Show Group - Self-explanatory?
Flight 815-ers Unite - Looking forward to discussing Lost and Fringe.
and, lastly...
100+ Book Challenge - I have been tracking my book reads starting in January. I think I'm at 79 books read so I'm on track for 100 by the end of the year.
Jackie, I bought that same book (Idiots Guide) about five years ago. Try as I might, I never got it either. I have been filled with shame at being "an idiot" about this since giving up, but it makes me feel a bit better knowing someone else couldn't get it either. :)
I went to a book fair today and picked up the following for a total of $7.50...
Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand (my second copy, but this one was printed in January 1928!)
Vampires of Nightworld by David Bischoff
The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver
Little Women by Louisa M. Alcott (printed in 1915)
Ender's Shadow by Orson Scott Card
Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
Amber, I just finished The Thirteenth Tale on audiobook. It was also my first audiobook.
I'm actually quite glad that I "read" that book that way because I don't think I would have made it through it otherwise. Too descriptive for my taste. However, I really liked Jill Tanner as Vida Winter - great voice, it tells such a story!
I've decided to keep going with audiobooks... The one that I started this morning on the way to work is The Monsters of Templeton by Lauren Groff.
I am currently reading Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. I'm enjoying it and am wondering if anyone else on here has read it and would you suggest I pick up the sequel?
I have completed my goal of reading five or more books on my to-read shelf so I splurged a bit this week:
1) Tales from the Thousand and One Nights by Anonymous
2) Lady Chatterley's Lover by D.H. Lawrence
3) Possession: A Romance by A.S. Byatt
4) On Beauty by Zadie Smith (Audiobook)
5) Grimspace by Ann Aguirre
6) Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith
Actually, the "not buying books" thing is going okay. I've read 4 books since making that commitment so I've almost made my goal.
Since Oscar Wao is our September read, I needed to order it. And, I wouldn't have received free shipping unless I spent over $25 with B&N so there, it is justified.
The Audio CD is for my drive to work and therefore doesn't count.
:)
Just ordered the following:
The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle
The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov
Oscar Wao (paperback version) by Junot Diaz
and on Audio CD, The Monsters of Templeton by Lauren Groff
5 - read a book on a plane
5 - read a book with a cat/dog/rabbit in your lap
5 - stay up reading well past your bedtime (too easy?)
10 - buy/gift a great book to a friend that might not otherwise have picked it up
I don't know if any of those are good... ?
