I loved Memoirs of a Geisha, and although it wasn't the best movie adaptation I thought they did a brilliant job of capturing the beauty of the story. I know what you mean, sometimes they really botch things up. The Good German was a travesty of a movie adaptation! I still shudder to think of it.
I am not sure whether they would show the adult scenes, particularly the homosexual ones. They might allude to it, if anything. Truthfully, that wouldn't bother me because it's not necessarily vital to the story. I wouldn't be surprised to see some steamy scenes with Yuki & Takeo, though. As long as they do a fine job with the romance between Takeo & Kaede I will be happy.
I'm most looking forward to the butt-kicking ninja stuff. I picture a Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon type of movie. I think they're still working on the screenplay, so I have to try to put this out of my head for now because it will probably be awhile!
I guess I'm unusual when it comes to books turned into movies...I tend to like them, unless they totally change the story. I don't always think they're GREAT adaptations, but I usually enjoy seeing books I like brought to life. But like I said, if they change the story (and I mean a major change, not just the color of someone's hair or something, but a major plot line) then it is unforgiveable in my opinion.
I am not sure who is in the cast or who is directing, I don't think it's coming out until 2010. There isn't much information out there yet. I really hope they do a good job with it, it certainly has potential to be a great movie.
Oh yeah, and I just finished The Anubis Gates and I'm on to Good Omens, the Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch.
Liz - I tried like hell to read Seven Gables and just couldn't get through it. It's one of the few books that I put down mid-way. I hope you have better luck than I do — when you finish I'll be curious to read your review, I'm contemplating giving it another go!
I'm with Jeremy on the Irving issue, he is one of my top 5 favorite authors! I also agree with him on The Memory Keeper's Daughter. In fact, I think I change my rating of that book every couple of weeks, back and forth between 2 and 3 stars. I kinda liked it, but only a little. I wish Goodreads would add 1/2 stars to their rating system!
Everything is IlluminatedExtremely Loud & Incredibly Close
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
A Prayer for Owen Meany
The World According to Garp
bnoir-That's too bad! I can understand that though, the 1st part is difficult to get into — but it picks up after that, I swear!
I'm sure there have been plenty, but ones that I remember distinctly are:Lamb
Marley & Me
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close and Everything is Illuminated (although I probably cried more in both of them)
I found these to be sufficiently depressing:The Rice Mother
The Kite Runner
A Prayer for Owen Meany
Love in the Present Tense
Flowers for Algernon
Fiona - you mean Nobu. I'm with you, he was so sweet & kind (until he went nutty when she wouldn't return his love, but I couldn't really blame him - or her, for that matter).
Hmmmm, well Tales from the moe.Republic is only rated 3.67 so that's definitely not it...and A Loop in Time only has one rating (5 stars), so I won't count that one. I think the highest rated book on my shelf is To Kill a Mockingbird.
I guess there really isn't a way to find out the highest rated book on the whole site, you'd have to take the number of reviews into account. Oh well!
I was flipping through my books to see what the highest ranked one was that I have read and became curious to know what the highest ranked book on the whole site is. If you know, please tell me!
Yeah, that's true and I was thinking the same thing!I'm not reading any YA now, but others that I've enjoyed as an adult are:
Harry Potter series
Twilight series
Chronicles of Narnia (always a fave)
Series of Unfortunate Events (haven't finished this series yet)
Artemis Fowl series (haven't finished this one yet either)
Animal Farm
I'd like to read the following (I'm sure there are more but these are off the top of my head):
Spiderwick Chronicles
Inheritance series
Gemma Doyle series
Uglies series
And I'd like to RE-read these as an adult:
A Wrinkle in Time
Charlotte's Web
The Little Prince
Alice in Wonderland
The Secret Garden
Interesting, it's always in the sci-fi sections in bookstores here in the US. In fact, I would be surprised to find it in YA considering some of the content.
