Book Condition? (60 new)
Apr 28, 2009 06:57PM

1218 I'm not really picky...if I buy brand new, when I'm finished with it, it still looks brand new. But if I have mooched it or whatever, there's no real way to know the condition before receiving it - though most of the time they're in good condition if not nearly brand new. I've borrowed books from friends and my sisters that are, um, well-loved. Memoirs Of A Geisha went through my 3 sisters before it got to me and was left on the dash (open) of a hot truck so the binding broke and the whole thing fell apart, lol. I was still able to read it, though! ;)

1218 Hi Arielle...welcome to GR! :) I'm a Canadian too...
Apr 23, 2009 07:26AM

1218 When you're reading a book and have to stop (I know, gasp...), do you finish the chapter, get to a section where it moves on but isn't a new chapter, or just stop reading wherever you are?

Usually I try to get to the end of a chapter before putting the book down...if I can't make it that long and there's a break coming up, I'll use that.

LOL, just a random question for the day... :)

1218 Thanks for all the suggestions and well-wishes, guys! :) I may take a couple different types of books and see what happens...after all, it'll be just over 24 hours, and much of that I'll be knocked out or sleeping, lol. :)

1218 I'm going in for laproscopic surgery next Wednesday...I have to be there at 6 am, but my surgery isn't until later on. After waking up I'll be at the hospital all by myself until probably my hubby comes in after work (around 4 or 5). He won't stay long because he'll have to look after our kids. I have to stay overnight and will probably be released the next morning around 11...if everything goes well.

Soooo...I've got like 70 books to choose from...help me pick a couple to take to the hospital. Here's my shelf of books I have here at home...if you've read any, let me know what you thought! Unfortunately I won't be able to buy any books before I go in...

1218 I do a little bit of both, mixed with mooching/swapping. I get MOST of my books via BookMooch, but it works out to be a good deal for me sending internationally (I get 3 points to send a book internationally and it costs less than sending within Canada).

The rest of my books are split...I don't really have much rhyme or reason as to why I get one from the library and another from a bookstore...depends on the money situation, or if I'm near a bookstore (I live in the middle of nowhere and rarely get to town, lol).
1218 I mostly hang out here (lol) but if I'm in the mood to check out some new books I might have missed here (since I mostly rely on seeing what friends are adding to their lists to add to my own here), I check out Amazon, Chapters Indigo and the last few months I've been checking out the indiebound.org at the first of the month to see what's coming up that might be interesting.

I swap books at BookMooch all the time, though. :)

1218 I read this a month or so ago...I had the same reaction. I was horrified that I was reading it but couldn't put it down! So sick!

1218 Jessica, I think the owner of that store is here on GoodReads, lol.

My sister and I went to a second-hand bookstore called At Second Glance. They had SO many books, it was crazy!

The one in town (I've lived here for about 9 years and just realized there was one...and it's a small town, lol...what is WRONG with me?!) is The Book Shelf.

1218 I just saw this when I went to check out some photos my sister put up, and thought it needed to be shared...

There's a "about libraries" photo contest going on there, some really cool photos! But this one really got me, lol...I'd LOVE to have shelves like that.
The Ape House (1 new)
Mar 10, 2009 08:19AM

1218 Since ya'll are reading Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen, I wondered how many are looking forward to her upcoming book The Ape House?

There's not much info about it, and it's been REPEATEDLY pushed back from publishing (it was originally supposed to be published in September 2008).

I'm really anxious to find out more about it.
Mar 10, 2009 08:10AM

1218 I won a copy of Beat The Reaper a month or so ago...it was the first time I won something (though I have received books from the publishers after entering the contest - but I wasn't chosen as a winner). I received both Sarah's Key and Coventry just by entering and not winning, lol.

1218 I think I read this book about a year ago and absolutely LOVED it...the Jacob in the nursing home alternated between making me laugh and breaking my heart, and I was very much interested in the traveling circus theme. I *loved* the ending!
Feb 11, 2009 06:38PM

1218 My "read" list is mostly what I've read since I joined GR, though when I first joined, I rated a few that I'd read recently (as in the last couple months). The only exceptions to that are Where The Heart Is by Billie Letts, and My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult - both of those are SUCH favorites, I had to add them. :)
Aug 21, 2008 08:58AM

1218 I just finished this book last night - TOTALLY loved it. It took me a while to get through, but I was travelling and didn't read as much as I'd intended (that seems to happen a lot).

The ending made me cry...even though Death already told us several times what was going to happen - my heart broke for Liesel.

I love/hate reading about WWII because it is intriguing to see what people were THINKING, but at the same time, it's so sad to see what so many went through (though Jews were the main part of Hitler's wrath, there were others as well - and I am part of one of those persecuted groups today) because of one person's prejudice.

Really, it was an amazing book, I'm so glad that I finally got around to reading it (it's been in 3 bookclubs so far and I never read it...lol...though I did own it, so it's about time)!
Aug 03, 2008 10:01AM

1218 I've only read one of his books - On Chesil Beach, and I really enjoyed that one. I have Atonement on my bookshelf, I just have too many others that I want to read first, lol!
Jul 31, 2008 08:10AM

1218 Thanks for all the suggestions!

When I climbed into bed last night he woke up so I asked him if he read, he told me he read 3 chapters. And then he told me ALL about what he read, lol. He was also asking about the library system, how long I can keep books for (3 weeks - he said he could read a book in 3 weeks).

So, looks like I may have a reader on my hands, lol...and I may have to upgrade my library pass to a family one. :)
Jul 30, 2008 10:08PM

1218 Well, I gave DH Velocity by Dean Koontz, because I happened to have that one laying around, lol. I just went to check on him and he's got the light turned off, so I'm not sure if he read and if he did, how much. Guess I'll find out tomorrow.
Jul 30, 2008 10:06PM

1218 Sounds good to me that Oscar is automatically next month's read with something else.

I'll be reading The Book Thief, since I've got that one sitting here. :)
