I normally don't do much shopping either -- but had a chance to hit up the 2-story Borders in downtown Louisville yesterday while on a business trip...I picked up Thunderstruck (Erik Larsen), The Secret Life of Houdini, Only Revolutions by Mark Danielewski, and Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the end of the World by Haruki Murakami. Of course, I can't read those yet because I just checked out five from the library... LOL. This will set me for Christmas break though. :)
YES! I just can't bring myself to do it hardly. I will let my mom or sister borrow them, but then I hound them until they are finished (otherwise, mom will keep a book for MONTHS!)The person below me refuses to leave a book unfinished.
Ooh, I second Neil Gaiman. However, as wonderful as that would be, I think my top pick would definitely be Ray Bradbury. His articles have always struck me as so personable, and he's still got such a "young-at-heart" outlook on things -- I would love to just chat with him.
I'm looking for some well-written novels that are similar to the kinds of stories told in the Indiana Jones movies or in the movie National Treasure. I love the mystery elements, the codes and ciphers, and how all these various historical elements fit together into something plausible in the hands of a good author.
Tim Powers does a fantastic job of this -- his novels are among my very favorites, especially because he works in the fantastical elements too.
Anyway, I'm hoping that someone here can help me out with some recommendations.
Thanks in advance!
Audrey
