1218 Linda...I have tried to finish Poisonwood Bible several times as well, with no success. I just cannot get into it! I have the same problem with Darkest Evening of the Year by Dean Koontz. My husband LOVES that one and I just put it back on the shelf after reading about 60 pages. Oh well!

1218 My first thought upon finishing this book was that it was boring and depressing. I'm not one to look for the metaphors, symbolism in books. I can't tell you if I liked it or not; I'm indifferent. All the vague implications of what was going on, figuring out what "completion" meant and THEN having someone spoil the book for me ON PURPOSE (darn her!). Just didn't get into it at all, probably won't read anything else by Ishiguro.

Oh well. My sister LOVED this book and is shocked that I'm not just falling all over it with praise. We've always liked different books though.

1218 Sounds good...I'm in. Well, after I finish "Never Let Me Go" and "Wuthering Heights"! I wish I was like my mother sometimes: she can read 3-4 books at the same time with no problems! I am a one-book-at-a-time girl.
1218 Our wedding anniversary is right before Thanksgiving, so we already gave books to one another. Hubby gave me "Grave Secret" by Charlaine Harris and I gave him "The Lost Symbol" by Dan Brown.

That is pretty much it for us. Our boys get books from grandparents every year, but I do not know what titles.

1218 Thanks. Liz-Your "1000" made me laugh right before bedtime. That would've made me dizzy too. Always good to go to sleep with a smile on my face! Thank you!

1218 I'm with you, Paul. I really cannot stand the new tall paperbacks. ESPECIALLY when I've purchased the first 6 books of a series in mass market paperback only to find that the remaining 2 books are ONLY available in the tall skinny paperback! It's irritating!

1218 Wow, that was long! Sorry! ;)~

1218 Well, I set a goal of 100 books for 2009. I have fallen FAR short of that goal with only 30 books under my belt, soon to be 31. Oh well, life gets in the way sometimes!

Early in the year I was on a vampire kick, never thought that would happen as I am not big into sci-fi, creatures of the night kind of subjects. I've read several books this year by authors I've never heard of, thanks to TNBBC.

Some of the books I truly enjoyed were:
"Rebecca" by Daphne du Maurier
"The Shadow of the Wind" by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
"Shutter Island" by Dennis Lehane

Some books I still regret reading:
"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams(still cannot believe I made it through that one and feel like I wasted that time!)
"The Time Traveler's Wife" by Audrey Niffenegger - just could not get into it and struggled to finish it.

I've been a member of Goodreads since November 2008 and became a member of TNBBC in December 2008. This group definitely gets me to read authors/books I would not normally consider, especially if it's YA or what I deem to be "chick lit".

I hope to read most of my TBR bookcase in 2010, especially since my boys are getting older and are able to entertain themselves more and more (sometimes they even tell me "no momma. You just watch us play, don't play with us." They're too funny sometimes).

One "side-effect" of reading so much in front of my boys is that they have started copying me. Sometimes they will break out one of their books and "read" it (ages 4 and 2 1/2 yrs, cannot read yet). My mom and hubby think it's adorable when they sit next to me and all three of us are reading.

Hope I can read more in the coming year than I did in this one!

1218 This was a difficult list to put together after choosing the first four! I have so many on my TBR bookcase, I've been trying to read through the books borrowed from my mom. Here we go:

1. The Alienist - Caleb Carr
2. Never Let Me Go - Kazuo Ishiguro
3. Big Cherry Holler - Adriana Trigiani
4. The Lost Symbol - Dan Brown
5. I Know this Much is True - Wally Lamb
6. Love and Freindship - Jane Austen
7. The Pledge - Rob Kean
8. The Purification Ceremony - Mark T. Sullivan
9. The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane - Katherine Howe
10. The Angel’s Game - Carlos Ruiz Zafon

What are you reading? (17679 new)

1218 I've just started reading "The Alienist" by Caleb Carr. Haven't gotten far enough into it to say whether or not I like it. I had to read this book because its sequel, "The Angel of Darkness", has been sitting on my bookshelf for years. I absolutely cannot read books out of order (i.e., #2 before #1) in a series. Drives me nuts!

1218 One of my favorites in high school, oh so many years ago. This would be a perfect reason to read it again!

1218 Cat 1: Shutter Island by Dennis LeHane

1218 Nope, you're not the only one JG...I liked this one better than TGWTDT. I share your feeling on Dragon Tattoo - I didn't love it, didn't hate. It just was. TGWPWF was much better, the numerous people didn't bother me, and I enjoyed learning some background.

1218 Just finished this afternoon. Except for the ending, I liked this a lot more than Dragon Tattoo. The end was a bit over the top and abrupt for me, but I figured something had to happen if a third book is out. Did I miss something or did they never really explain what "All the Evil" was? Maybe I just completely glossed over it? The implants were too funny, seemed a bit too vain for the image I had of Salander.

1218 LOVED IT! Didn't think I would after the first chapter or two, but I was pleasantly surprised! Olive's a very honest but harsh woman that I really enjoyed reading about. At first the open story lines bothered me, but now I think that they were part of the reason I kept reading. You never quite know what happened to a particular person, like that preacher's daughter. It was implied that something was not right with her, but you just don't know. I felt like slapping her and her son several times, my husband laughed at me when I told him that.

Ooops, gotta put kids to bed. I have so much in my head about this book! Hope I can come back here later.

1218 I read this over two days last week. I REALLY enjoyed it...a whole lot more than I thought I would. Olive seems very honest in a harsh way, but I think that's part of her appeal! Can't say much more in this thread...going over to the spoiler thread!

1218 Gotta love moms...mine let me borrow her copy of TGWPWF (114 holds at the library!) and bought Olive Kitteridge for me (83 holds at the library). Momma is AWESOME!

1218 When are the polls closing? Just need to know so I can plan my trip to the store!
