1218 I updated my list today to incorporate the new Newsweek Top 100 list. I also added the best selling novels of all-time. The only problem with the the best-sellers list is it doesn't incorporate books from series (haven't been able to find a source that doesn't lump books in a series all together).

If you do an export, you can save it as an xls file. The formulas need to be updated, but it shouldn't be to hard.

To Count the things that have been X'd you do a COUNTIF(A:A,"X") and to do the percent you do a
COUNTIF(A:A,"X")/COUNT(B:B).

Ditto for the Y and the Z.

I went ahead and added the Oprah list as well. I originally omitted it because I'm not the hugest fan. But there are some great books on there. Anyone who gets "average" reader to read exceptional novels does right by me.

1218 I through together this spreadsheet a while back to keep track of my reading vs various top 100 lists and award winning books.

http://bit.ly/2sR8Hx

I've got sheets for the all the biggest awards, the BBC list, the 1001 list, and even a NBBC sheet.

It's a little over the top, but I enjoy lists and seeing how my reading stacks up. I generally read whatever I feel like, but I do try to target an award winner once or twice a month.

Anyhow, give it a look over. If you are interested in having your own spreadsheet, I think you can just go file->create a copy, but I'm not sure.

Let me know what you think and if you have any good lists I'm missing.

1218 Haven't had much stamina lately :) My wife usually goes to be around 10:00 and I try to sneak in a couple hours of reading. But usually my eyes are sore and my brain is mush by then.

1218 26. Watchmen by Alan Moore (408 pages)
27. The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch (722 pages)
28. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer (278 pages)

Three different genres, three different writing styles, yet I loved them all!

1218 I think it would be fun to do a silly topic month, meaning everyone nominates somewhat oddball topics and we vote on them

Topics could be things like "Books with an inanimate object as a major character" or "Books you bought cause the cover was really cool" or "Books you love but are too embarrassed to admit it" and crazy stuff like that.

I really like book/movie pair. In fact, I nominated a similar thing in the Summer challenge thread.

1218 Not really a splurge by I nabbed a hardback The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly for $6 on the bargain shelf. I felt pretty good about that.

1218 Christy: I'm about halfway through Dog in the night-time and have liked it thus far. I was curious if you know any autistic children? Perhaps the reason that Dog in the night speaks so much to me is because I have watched several of my neighbors and friends battle the same battles. I can definitely relate to the parents and how the smallest things over time can just tear you apart. Not to say that you're not allowed to dislike the book :)

1218 21. To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis (493 pages)

I loved this book! Best book I've read all year.

1218 I just finished the book and sadly, I didn't care for it. It's funny, cause I almost feel like a failure, but I just couldn't get into it. I felt like I do in the gym where I have to force myself to do 3 more reps or run just a little longer. I would constantly look at the pages numbers and tell myself, just 10 more pages and you'll be done with this section.

I did really enjoy Feathers and Saltwater though :)

1218 I'm starting PotB tonight. I'm going to be completely honest, I don't have any idea what this book is about. Not even a scratch. But you all wouldn't lead me astray right? :)

1218 19. Uglies by Scott Westerfeld (432 pages)
What are you reading? (17784 new)
Apr 29, 2009 10:41PM

1218 Just finished The Giver by Lois Lowry and I'm going to start Uglies by Scott Westerfeld tonight. My sister's birthday is coming up and I'm looking for a good series to gift her.

1218 I love movies in the summer. How about we find a movie we really want to see in theaters or at the video store, and then read the book first. Then watch the movie and see how it compares.

I just finished The Time Traveler's Wife and am interested to see how the movie turns out. (I hope the movie is more interesting, but that's off topic)

Just a thought.

1218 So, at the beginning of April, my total books read for the year stood at a measly 8 novels. This month I pushed a bit harder and was able to knock out 10 books. at total of 3941 pages. I'm definitely back on pace for my goal.

For May, I'm planning on reading eight more. I now think 65 will be pretty easy and 75 may be in reach.

Blah, blah, blah :)

1218 18. The Giver by Lois Lowry (208 pages)

It was a great book and an easy read, which is always a bonus!
