Jo wrote: I think its ok so far. I haven't read much yet but it feels a little bit too similar to all the other young adult paranormal romance books. Hopefully the more i get into it the more it will become its own story and not just an endless remake of books like twilight.Well, good luck with it. I'd love to hear what you think after you finish it. I keep wondering if maybe my timing was off and I just wasn't in the mood for that type of story when I tried reading it.
Jo wrote: "I am reading Shiver"How are you liking it so far, Jo? I tried reading it here recently and, unfortunately, just couldn't get into it.
Alisha wrote: "I'm currently reading A Good and Happy Child A Novel by Justin Evans and it's pretty creepy so far."Oooo, good luck, Alisha! I tried reading that one but it creeped me out big time - to the point were I was having weird demon dreams every night. I ended up taking that baby back to the library. It's a shame though, because I was REALLY enjoying the author's writing. I just couldn't do the subject matter. I'll be interested to hear what you think when you finish it!
Paula, I hear ya! I bought Pillars over a year ago because I was dying to read it and there was such a long wait for it at the library. And here I am, a year later, finally getting around to it! Funny how that happens. LOL
I believe it will, Paula. I'm already not wanting to put it down and I'm only on page 86. It feels great to be completely drawn in so early in the story!
I just started on The Pillars of the Earth today and I'm loving it so far! I don't know why I waited so long to pick it up.
Claire wrote: Hi Heather! I read The Handmaid's Tale as well and loved it! I have The Blind Assassin on my shelf and hope to read that sometime soon.Blind Assassin was such a great book, Claire! There were so many twists and turns in the story and it kept me on my toes and guessing up to the very end. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
Petra, Thanks for the recommendations! I went out and bought The Handmaid's Tale after I finished Blind Assassin :)Jayme, I also have Alias Grace so I'm glad to hear you say it's a favorite of yours! :)
Now I just need to read them! LOL
Stephanie wrote: "I'm reading The Blind Assassin. It's my first Atwood and I'm enjoying it so far."Hi Stephanie, I read Blind Assassin here recently and LOVED it! It was a 5 star read for me. It was my first Atwood too, and I can't wait to read some of her other books. Enjoy! :)
Writerlibrarian wrote: I read Suite Francaise last year. I enjoyed it. It's heartbreaking to know the story behind it.Yeah, I read on the cover that the author died in Auschwitz and that this story wasn't discovered until sixty some odd years after her death. I'm really wanting to do a little more research on the author and find out more about her life. You're right, it is very heartbreaking. Knowing what happened to her makes this book feel even heavier, emotionally, than it already is.
I finished 'Salem's Lot last night. I thought it was just ok...not the creepfest I was hoping for. Now I'm moving on to Suite Française.
Fiona (Titch) wrote: "Just finished the audio of American Wife - Curtis Sittenfeld. Going to carry on and finish Case Histories - Kate Atkinson. Also today I am listening to Scarpetta - Patricia Cornwell and read my Boo..."How did you like American Wife, Titch? I bought that one a couple of weeks ago at Goodwill.
Kathy wrote: Heather, I was heartened to read that it took you a little while to get into The Book Thief. I tried reading it last year and it just didn't click, but I want to read it, as everyone raves about it. So, I will give it another try soon.Kathy, it's definitely worth another try. The last half of the book was the best, in my opinion. You know, it's really tricky when you hear so many glowing reviews for a book because it sets the bar so darn high going into it. That's what happened with me. I was fully expecting to be blown away from the get go and when it didn't happen I was truly surprised. It finally did click, it just took a little time. Good luck! :)
Hi Cristina! Welcome to the group :)I just recently finished The Book Thief and really enjoyed it. It took me a little while to really get into it, but once I did, there was no putting the book down! It was a very emotional read, particularly there at the end. I hope you enjoy it!
Ahh, Kathy, that's awesome! I'm so excited that you got to meet her face to face! Plus you have a nice signed copy of Echo to treasure :)
Maureen wrote: We read The Mermaid Chair in my face-to-face book club, and several of the members had previously read (and loved) Bees. They were very disappointed in Mermaid Chair. So, Heather, you didn't miss much!Ok, good! I definitely don't think I'll bother revisiting that one then. Thanks, Maureen! :)
Liz wrote: "I loved The Secret Life of Bees! Did anyone else read, that, and then pick up The Mermaid Chair, only to find themselves disappointed?"Yep! As soon as I finished The Secret Life of Bees I immediately grabbed The Mermaid Chair, read a few chapters, then took it back to the library. I just couldn't get into it. I've wondered if I didn't give it a fair chance...If maybe it gets better as it goes along. But since joining GR, I've heard a lot of people say how disappointed they were in it. So, I don't really have any plans at this point to give it another go.
Maureen wrote: Apparently, I'm all about the vampires lately. Nothing wrong with that, Maureen! ;)
I started Salem's Lot by Stephen King today.
Ann from S.C. wrote: "I am really getting into THE SHADOW IN THE WIND. It is getting better with every page!!"Ann, I LOVED Shadow of the Wind! It's definitely one of my favorite books of all-time. Enjoy :)
