Just finished listening to A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy O'Toole. The narrator was amazing and I found the book especially enjoyable.
Just finished Day After Night A Novel by Anita Diamant. I give it a 3.4 - good, not great. I have read several WWII/holocaust novels and this one takes a bit of a new twist, but isn't quite as riveting as the others.
Just started The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde and so far so good.
Finished Breakfast with Buddha by Ronald Merullo and surprise, surprise, I really liked it. It's one of those novels that sneaks up on your and makes you really think what it was that grabbed you and held on. Isn't that what a good book is supposed to do, though?
Started Stones from the River by Ursula Heigi and "we'll see".
Just started listening to A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy O'Toole and finding it really funny. Also, making progress with Breakfast with Buddha by Ronald Merullo and not sure how I feel about it. Not used to books with a spiritual current in them, but finding it somewhat thought provoking.

Karen Lee: Glad to read you liked both City of Thieves and Skeletons at the Feast. Like you, I thought they were both excellent. Hope you like Shutter Island as much as I did and get prepared for a whopper of twists and turns.
Jen wrote: "I am currently reading The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America."
Ooooo, Jen, Devil in the White City is a great book. I loved the details about the fair and the murder mystery thrown into the mix.
Just finished Await Your Reply by Michael Chaon. Hmmm. What does one say about a book that seems to be split between the lovers and ... I was soooo excited to start this one, but have to admit it left me flat.
Ann from S.C. wrote: "I am starting SOUTH OF BROAD by Pat Conroy."
Ann: Will be interested to hear what you think of South of Broad. I loved it and we discussed it for our B&N book group and they loved it as well.

Cathy: If you are into that time period (and by the way I thought My Enemy's Cradle was an excellent read as well), you might try Those Who Save Us by Jenna Blume.

Don't be daunted by the size of The Given Day. It is really (believe it or not) a fast read.
Just finished The Given Day A Novel by Dennis Lehane. WOW, what a book (all 702 pages). I was reluctant to pick it up at first, but just could not put it down. What a history lesson along the way. I gave it a 5.
Wayne wrote: "I just finished Strange Candy by Laurel K. Hamilton. Good book of short stories and also a good intro to the world of Anita Blake.
I have just started The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly....."
I loved The Book of Lost Things. Read it awhile back, but found the premise quite intriguing and a totally fast read.
Eric wrote: "Started Hannah's Dream by Diane Hammond. Just finished Earth Abides by George R. Stewart"
Eric: Hope you enjoy Hannah's Dream as much as I did. BTW, everyone I loaned it to loved it as well. Happy reading.

If you have The Given Day, I highly recommend it.
Jenna wrote: "Still reading the Poisonwood Bible which is very slow going. I think I am also going to start Shutter Island. I got that out of the library finally and have been dying to read it."
Jenna/Paula: I loved Shutter Island. While I am currently reading a Dennis Lehane novel and really loving it, I am not totally a huge fan of his, but Shutter Island is IMO one of his best.
I am about 130 pages into The Given Day by Dennis Lehane and really like the pace. Gaining insight in the history of the times is another great benefit.
Michelle♥ wrote: "I just read Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane. This was by far the BEST book that I have read ALL year. If you have not read it, I would suggest you pick it up! I literall..."
Michelle: I read Shutter Island awhile ago and never saw the ending coming. Whew! I recommended it to several people and they loved it as well.

Paula: I read The Help recently and loved it. Everyone I have lent it to loved it and there is so much to discuss on this one with my friends. Enjoy.

Take it from the "Pat Conroy sceptic" it does not disappoint. You know how sometimes you go through a book and all of a sudden it just seems the author runs out of gas? This one never did.
Just finished South of Broad by Pat Conroy and really, really liked it. This is coming from a person who read Prince of Tides and gave up on Pat Conroy there and then. This was for our local B&N book club read and am so glad someone "made me do it". Next is The Shanghai Girls by Lisa See.
