This is the Spoilers thread, right? So it's okay to talk about how he won the election? It won't spoil the results for anyone?? ;-)
Seriously, I really enjoyed reading this! It gave me a much better sense of who President Obama is. It gave a glance behind the campaign face, the debate face, the trying-to-win-a-campaign face. I hope he'll be able to hang on to his core beliefs through all of the turmoil he'll face now. I'm comforted to know he came from such a strong base of beliefs.
I'm feeling a little sheepish.......I've had this in my "to be read" pile for 2 years.
I typically read the "classics" growing up, but never read Dracula.
Why on earth did I wait so long?????
I was expecting the writing style to be difficult to follow, or something that wouldn't capture my interest.
Sheesh! It's a classic for crying out loud! What was I worried about??
I'm loving this! It really flows. How cool!
Laura- That's a really, really tough question!
I've read them all except "Edgar"
Book Thief was amazing. Really thought provoking. Wonderful characters. Serious setting.
Time Traveler was amazing. I wanted to spend more time with the characters. I loved it and wanted more....even though more just wasn't possible. Again wonderful characters. Lighter in nature than Book Thief.
Water was amazing. (Are you sensing a theme?? LOL!) I'm a sucker for stories with animals in them...so, yeah...I was a sucker for this book. Characters were amazing. They really captured my heart. Some serious, some fun.
Kite Runner and 1000 Suns wre amazing. (See...I told you there was a theme!) The characters were amazing. Just amazing. More serious than some. Beautiful language. Beautiful settings--while still giving a sense of the turmoil from teh lands.
I really can't reccomend one as the best. It just depends on what you are in the mood for.
Sorry--that's probably not helpful. :-(
Well.....I'm NEVER going to disagree with a reccomendation of Life of Pi! (Right Boof??)
If that doesn't appeal to you (and I can't imagine it wouldn't...grin!), my second choice would be To Kill A Mockingbird. (I think I remember seeing that on your to-read list.)
It's an awesome read. The characters are amazing. And it's deep....but not too deep.
Just a thought
Emma- (I'm obviously not Boof....but thought I'd reply anyway....;-))
I hope you love Pi as much as Boof and I do. It's the first book in a long time that I had a super strong reaction to. It's what started be on the road to finding people to talk to about the books I read....and eventually ended up here.
When I read it I didn't know who the heck Richard Parker was. That was fun!!
Ken- No Way!!! I love Rachel....I actually cheered when I heard MSNBC was giving her a show. She's great!
(I love Keith also....but Mr. Spuds rolls his eyes when I talk about Keith too much...I suppose some of his special comments are a little to much for him.)
It's good to know that I'm not the only MSNBC freak....er...I mean fan. :-)
Of course I do this all while lurking here..sigh
Ummmmmm.....hi....my name's Spudsie...
(HI SPUDSIE!)
.....and....um.....I'm addicted to books. And buying books. And talking about books. And writing about books. Sniffle.
It was all under control until I found TNBBC. Sniffle.
It started so innocently. I wanted to talk with other readers. How was I to know they were really a group of "enablers??"
I mean, sure....it warned me on the "about us" section that my reading list would grow. But....that's hardly enough. Sniffle.
Now my shoe collection won't even talk to me anymore. They feel so unloved and abandoned. Sniffle.
It's been 15 days since I last purchased a bo....
!&#(#^#(@)&#W.....stupid Amazon.com.....I forgot about that not yet published book......that I had on auto-order...
It's been 34 seconds since I last purchased a book. Sniffle.
((Waving at Boof!!!))
Grin! I knew you'd be stopping by this post!
I luv Pi as well. Really impactful.
The Book Thief has also had a deep impact on me. But you didn't ask for the top 2 books....so I gotta stick with Pi.
Ooooooo! I know Boof's answer..... ;-)
(But I'll let her answer for herself.)
I only know her answer because it's my answer too.
(Patiently waiting for Boof to log on. Hi!!)
Wait.
There's yet ANOTHER genre of books I'm not familiar with?????
Whimper.
I had my review today at work and got an awesome raise and was looking forward to buying shoes. But now I'm gonna have to buy more books!!!
Agggghhhhh! (I blame Ken. ;-))
(Sheepishly looking at the ground....)
"Big Russ and Me" by Tim Russert- I read this after Tim died. I lost it when I read anything that referenced his son Luke and his hopes for Luke's future and his relationship with Luke.
"The Art of Racing in the Rain"- I cried buckets at this one.
"The Book Thief"- Buckets and buckets for this one, probably should have mentioned it first since it made me cry the most
Many, many books make me shed a tear or two. But these three made me weep.
Welcome Ben!
I LOVE Jack London!! :-) When I was in high school I wrote a year long term paper about him. His life is just as interesting as his stories!
Woo hoo!!!
Our power went out Sunday afternoon. It came back on yesterday a little after 6PM. But the internet and cable were still down.
I've been going through withdraw not being able to get to my blog and to this group!! I need a fix! LOL!
We originally thought we'd be without power for a week or more...so a day or so seems like nothing.
Someone catch me up. What'd I miss? (Besides all of y'all....I really missed this group!)
