Diane -
For me Lion Amongst Men fell in the Son of A Witch category....interesting but not as good as Wicked. The nice thing about it is that it does close a few circles that started in the first two books.
JG - Fforde was funny and self deprecating. He was very nice to all the folks that came to see him - signed books, took pictures. He a read an excerpt and then talked a bit about his writing habits and answered questions.
I have one signed by Jasper Fforde - the Thursday Next series. I went to a reading/signing he did at a local bookstore.
I liked March and Year of Wonders and found this one very enjoyable as well. I liked Hanna's story running through the book as an anchor for the novel. I did find the other chapters that went back into the book's history better though - more engaging. Hanna's storyline could get a little convoluted.
Prince and the Pauper
White Rabbit
Yellow Book Road - all children's book stores
Mysterious Galaxy - sci fi/fantasy
The Book Mark - used books
I actually finished The Poe Shadow but agree it was not well done. Too many twists and turns just for the sake of being twisty and turny.
I never finished Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. Major snooze fest.
Some series that I've enjoyed that involve fantasy/sci fi are:
The Time Quartet - Madeline L'Engle
The Dark is Rising - Susan Cooper
Chronicles of Narnia - CS Lewis
Eragon - Chris Paolini
I think all of these would be reading level and age appropriate too.
I second all Mosca said. Erdrich is one of my all time favorite authors. Start with Love Medicine and then go through the series in order. Almost all her books are interconnected. You'll see characters and locations from the series pop up in later books.
There are a lot of characters so it can become easily to lose track of who is who. You can actually find 'family trees' of the characters online.
Charlotte's web, Rats of NIMH. I'm currently reading A Lion Amongst Men where the Cowardly Lion is the main character.
Add me to the list of wanting 1/2 stars! It would be a nice way to give a little more exactness to your rankings.
I've read both Inkheart and Inkspell now. While I generally liked them the characters weren't as compelling to me as those in other YA novels I've read recently (The Book Thief, the Twilight series, etc). I also have a hard time envisioning Brendon Fraiser as Mo.
I've read the first 3 books and enjoyed them. I love the humor in the stories and how strong the female characters are.
Mrs. Dalloway - Virginia Woolf.*sniff*
Now I will only loan books to a very select few special people that I trust to not only return them but take good care of them. They are my paper babies after all. =P
