Aug 12, 2009 07:27PM

1218 10.2 Percy Bysshe Shelly – Born August 4, 1792 And Died July 8, 1822 – Famous English Poet – Read A Book Written By An Author That Lived During His Lifetime - Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus by Mary W. Shelley.

I think I wrote that I would read Bram Stoker's Dracula, but it wasn't on the shelf at the library. However, Frankenstein was in, so it got the honor. The novel certainly has a great deal more to it than the 1931 movie portrayed - and more than I remember of reading it in my twenties.

Running Total : 52 tasks, 72 books, 915 Points

1218 Broke 900!! If I can get Texas read while on vacation, I'll be finished by the end of next week.

10.8 Our House In The Middle Of Our…(Street, Drive, Court, Lane Etc.). Your task is to read a book whose title has the one of those that matches where you currently live. - A 5th Avenue Christmas by Tracy Cozzens

Running total 70 books, 51 tasks, 905 points

Aug 11, 2009 04:06PM

1218 25.3 Cait's Task-In honor of our Mod Squad…One from Lori's…One from Cynthia's… - There's No Place Like Here by Cecelia Ahern (Cynthia's) and Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz (Lori's)

I found Odd Thomas strangely compelling. Although I didn't find any of the characters sympathetic, I kept having to pick it up again to see what would happen next.

There's No Place Like Here was also compelling, but by the end of the book, I was desperately wanting a happy ending for everyone involved.

Running total 69 books, 50 tasks, 895 points

1218 Adrienne wrote: "What is wrong with me? I can't read!!!

I've tried reading about 4 different books, but I just can't get into them. I'm afraid I will get stuck at 245 points and never get another one. *sigh*"

I always call that "mental indigestion." Try reading them from the middle and going back to the beginning later.

1218 15.7 Popularity Contest - The DaVinci Code by Dan Brown and The Nanny Diaries by Emma McLaughlin

I was all set to dislike The DaVinci Code and like The Nanny Diaries because of the perversity of de gustibus non est disputandum. I found that the first was a satisfying thriller (although I'd seen enough clips of the movie to see Tom Hanks all through the pages) which was a vast improvement on the main source (Holy Blood, Holy Grail, a dull book full of might-be-possible-therefore-plausible-therefore-definitely-is reasoning). The second was a thin layer of intellectual snobbery over a large pothole full of schmaltz, made me want to gag.

Running total 68 books, 49 tasks, 870 points

Just a note that Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? was the basis of the movie, Blade Runner.

My secret is multitasking. I read while eating, making the bed, loading the dishwasher, vacuuming, watching tv... DJ, on the other hand, absorbs them by osmosis. LOL
