12161 I am going sailing for a few weeks and I think it is ironic that it took about 30 minutes to pack all my clothes, toiletries and so forth. Yet I have sent about three hours if not more updating books on my e-reader, downloading audio books on my ipod and creating playlists. Funny where my priorities lie :-)

How much time do you spend organizing your reading list?

12161 The author of the month for July and August is Jim Butcher

Jim Butcher is the author of the Dresden Files, the Codex Alera, and a new steampunk series, the Cinder Spires. His resume includes a laundry list of skills which were useful a couple of centuries ago, and he plays guitar quite badly. An avid gamer, he plays tabletop games in varying systems, a variety of video games on PC and console, and LARPs whenever he can make time for it. Jim currently resides mostly inside his own head, but his head can generally be found in his home town of Independence, Missouri.

Jim goes by the moniker Longshot in a number of online locales. He came by this name in the early 1990′s when he decided he would become a published author. Usually only 3 in 1000 who make such an attempt actually manage to become published; of those, only 1 in 10 make enough money to call it a living. The sale of a second series was the breakthrough that let him beat the long odds against attaining a career as a novelist.

All the same, he refuses to change his nickname.

12161 The Book of the Month for July is Moon Called

So my editor called and said, "Hey, Patty, you know those books you like? The modern paranormal fantasy with vampires and werewolves?"

And I found myself writing two of them. Since I was pretty burned out from writing Raven's Strike in a very short time, it seemed like it might be a better answer to writer's funk than just taking time off -- especially since it paid better than vacationing.

Moon Called is the beginning of the story of Mercedes Thompson a coyote shapeshifter who is also a pretty decent mechanic. Mercy's world looks a lot like ours except that the Otherworld is begining to be forced out of hiding by our modern technologies. Mercy shares her back fence with the local Alpha werewolf and works evenings on the vampire Stefan's VW bus. She's safe and content -- which doesn't make a very story, does it? So, of course, matters begin to change on the first page. In this book Mercy faces trolls and gremlins, old boyfriends and older vampires. I hope you enjoy her story.

I am so glad Mrs Briggs took her up on that!!

If you have never read this series please do yourself a favor and read it!!
