Death in Pratchett's Discworld series.
Allanon in Brooks' Shannara series.
Hettar the horselord in Eddings' Belgariad.
I can't even remember how many times I've read the Shannara books - they're brilliant! I hope they do a good job on the movie, though. I'd be gutted if it bombed.
The book is far better than the movie (and the movie's ending isn't nearly as good as the real ending in the book!). Definitely recommend the book.
I've finished "The Time Traveler's Wife'. Now reading 'The Word and the Void' omnibus, Agatha Christie's 'A mysterious affair at Styles', and also a book on Norse myths.
I love the Shannara books and have re-read them quite a few times (esp the first trilogy). This is probably because these were the first fantasy books I ever read (aside from fairy tales, that is!
I'd stick with the books (obviously have done already). But you don't have to read them all in one go - that would drive anyone crazy! (That's my personal opinion after reading the first Terry Goodkind book - it bored me to tears and I can't imagine reading that series one book after the other.)
But yes, all of the books follow the formula of an Ohmsford being sent on a quest to find some magical/important object in order to defeat some kind of enemy; and meeting up with one or more more famous characters (eg Allanon, Garet Jax) to help him along the way. However, once you get past that formula, then you realise the stories are all interesting in their own way. If it's not the quest that is interesting, then it's the situations the characters find themselves in, or the relationships between the characters. My personal favs are the relationship between Jair Ohmsford and the gnome Slanter in Wishsong; and then the Ilse Witch is also interesting, especially in the latest trilogy.
I think libraries are great. I usually just get the books that I'm curious about, but wouldn't normally buy.
I only buy books that I know I'll want to keep forever and re-read at some point. That said, I've had to put a bookshop ban on myself. Not allowed to buy any new books until I've read at least 20 of the 45 new books currently piled under my bed!
I'm halfway through James Herbert's "Once...". Then on my to-read list there are
- Breaking Dawn ~ Stephenie Meyer
- The Word and the Void trilogy - Terry Brooks
