Christmas (27 new)
5 days ago, 07:06PM

10907 Christmas is a holiday celebrating families and children.

Christmas-like holidays were celebrated everywhere. The Puritans outlawed Christmas because the celebrations were rowdy and not like they are today. Much later on, Christmas was declared a federal holiday. But they needed a reason for it. Ergo: families and children. Prior to this, families were very strict. Now, however, families are normally more relaxed and Christmas celebrates that.

10907 But I think it's possible for kids to learn that lesson as long as there are plenty of other kids around that do believe in Santa. Then they can realize that it's easy to get sucked into lies that almost everyone is telling - but they know the truth.

10907 He's also pointing out that there's NO way to prove that it's the Christian god and not Zeus 'answering' your prayers, so why waste your time believing it is?

Yes, but if you spent your entire life believing in what your parents told you to believe, it makes it harder to break away from it and make an unbiased decision.

That's what I think.

Mm, gotcha.

10907 Hmmm. If you ever had kids, would you have them believe in Santa?

Why don't you ever say Merry Christmas?

You can't say "The reason I'm a Christian is because I want to go to heaven." That means you believe in heaven already - which is a Christian belief.

Also, you hardly 'chose' it. Your parents were obviously Christians who obviously had a Bible or two in the house. I highly doubt that you looked up other religions when you were young. If your parents were Muslim or Buddhist, you would claim you 'chose' that too.

10907 I keep considering what I'm going to do if I ever have kids. Celebrate? Don't? Call it Christmas? Who knows.

Actually, I did 'feel' him before. And look, I'm an atheist now. Feeling something doesn't make it true. All it means is that you have emotions.

10907 Actually, we never said believing in something you can't see is dangerous. We said believing in something without evidence is dangerous.

I'm not pretending it's the same... It's just a way to think of it...

And in thinking of faith as air, you are pretending it's the same. Well, it ISN'T. There is evidence for air, there is no evidence for God. The fact that you cannot see either of them is absolutely irrelevant.
