10855 I think that religion can actually “comfort” people a little too much. Many Christians I know have such a belief in the afterlife that they just give up on real life. My mother, for example, is constantly saying that this life can’t be it. There must be something better after we die. Meanwhile she spends her days (when she’s not at work) at home in a robe, with no ambition to get out and meet people or enrich her life in any way. There’s also a saying that I absolutely hate from Christians “Let go and let God.” To me that just sounds like the person has completely given up any responsibility for their actions or lives.

As for me, when I was a teenager and still a believer, I found that I was always feeling guilty about my actions because God might be watching with disapproval. This guilt however rarely, if ever forced me to change my evil ways. Mostly it just made me feel like crap half the time. In hindsight, I never really felt all that comforted by the belief in God and heaven, but maybe it’s because I didn’t have a good enough imagination to completely delude myself about it all.

10855 Thanks for the heads up Nathan. I'll make sure it's on my Netflix queue. I have yet to see it.

10855 I can relate R.C. I visit friends in Fresno often and my family lives in Bakersfield. Luckily I escaped. :)

10855 This reminds me of when there was a bunch of controversy over flying the confederate flag.

In my opinion I think it's great that people fly that flag. It's like a beacon that says "look at me, I'm a racist moron!" It's nice to know that all I have to do is look at the person's car or what they're wearing and be able to adjust my interaction with them accordingly. Same goes for other displays of belief like jesus fish, or yes on prop 8 signs.

As for what motives exist for those that do advertise their beliefs, I'm not sure. I think it's just a way of finding people with your same interests.

10855 Too bad. I saw that they had over a hundred members and thought that some of them might not have come across our group yet.

10855 Speaking of getting people in here, an invitation to the Faith & Spirituality group might be a good start. I'm not a member but I think Rick, R.C. and Eric are. Maybe one of them could mention it to that group.

10855 If anyone even attempts to say that animals don't suffer as much as humans I'll have PETA hunt you down.

10855 This one looks really nice. Now that I see it up, I think it's the better pick.

10855 Wow, no Nathan? How boring for them. What are they going to talk about now? This is what I envision since I can't see their boards anymore...

"What did you do over the weekend?"

"I wore a short skirt to church and flirted with the pastor."

"Me too! Christians are so cool! I gotta go finish Twilight now and pray to God to forgive me for reading such a secular, heathen book. TTYL!"

10855 Being rude is very subjective. Here are some things that I find to be rude:

-A person who makes comments on threads and then deletes them after other people have replied is rude. (Crystal Marie)

-Someone being engaged in conversation and abruptly stops without so much as a “see ya” is pretty rude. (Tommy – Evil (pt. 2) thread on Atheist board)

-Somebody stating, “Nobody asked you Nathan, for your personal opinion” (Crystal Marie) is quite rude especially on an open forum.

-Lying about why you joined a group when your reasons were posted for everyone to see - rude. (Katie)
Good catch Rick.

Do you truly think someone simply saying that your ideas are idiotic and pathetic is a rude personal attack? If so then please think about how a gay person feels every time Christians talk about hating the sin and not the sinner. “I love you gay person but I hate that you want to marry your life partner.” It is a slap in the face and is in my opinion incredibly RUDE.

10855 I don't know Dan, we might alienate the FSM followers with that one.

Just kidding, it looks good to me. :)

10855 I think Nathan's image is perfect, but I do have a soft spot for Buddy Christ. :)

10855 Now that I'm thinking about it though, those images might dissuade the religious folks from joining the group. Maybe I should look for a nice shiny bible image or something.

10855 By the way Dan, sorry if I was being presumptuous, but boredom struck. :)

10855 While the lovely goodreads question mark might actually work for this group, I thought I'd try to see if I could find something that might be a better fit...
