It's fabulous that you guys chose this! I've had it out from the library since mid-October (I wanted to read it as a spooky October book, but just started it the last week of Oct.), so I can actually read it with someone for once:P
I'm about halfway through. I also had problems in the early goings with all of the changing of narrators...I was confused if it was the girl or her father or a young Rossi telling the story. But as the pieces keep dropping into place (and there are just the two narrators to follow) I'm starting to pick up speed. I don't know what page you're on, Lauren, but keep with it! I'm just started Chapter 44 and I'm getting hooked!!
In the past week I've finished The Queen's Fool by Philippa Gregory and New Moon by Stephenie Meyer.I found The Queen's Fool interesting because it showed one of my favorite time periods from a new set of eyes. I'm mildly obsessed with the Tudors, so I stayed with this lengthy read despite it not being exactly what I was expecting. The end was a tiny bit cheesy, but I'm not sure there was really any place left to go. I imagine that if this were read in school, they would tear it apart nine million different ways to break down how the narrator, Hannah, changes through the story, but I was more interested in the other characters (is that bad??)
As for New Moon, I felt I had to read it because of the first tidbit printed in the first book, Twilight, which totally hooked me. Sadly, I was kind of disappointed. As with Twilight, it took me nearly 200 pages to start to care about what was going on and sit up a little to pay attention. Maybe because I'm not a "young adult" and maybe I'm more a fan of vampires so that may be why this one let me down a bit (I don't want to give too much away.)
Gosh, what a hard question! As someone said earlier, I hesitate to name one favorite...I have read a lot of good things that are favorites for different reasons and I have a lot more to read and more favorites to discover. That being said, I think I would have to say Eleven Seconds by Travis Roy. I admit I am a crazed hockey fan, but that is not why I chose this book...it is an amazing story (and a true one at that!) of one young man's perseverance against all odds. I think what actually makes this book even closer to my heart is that this happened to Travis just two years before I went to college and discovered my passion for hockey...what happened to him could have happened to any one of my boys...I have seen him at games and he continues to be a beacon of hope for everyone, not just those who have suffered a life-changing injury. Bravo to Travis for sharing his story...I cried a lot, but was uplifted by his determination not to give up and I'm sure a lot of other people out there were as well!
Glad I'm not the only one who has always included a library in my dream house!! For now, I have to live with at least two bookcases in every room...but some day I will get that library:P
Hello all! As I think I've posted through another thread here, I have a minor issue with trying to read several books at once...I am currently working on the following books:Twilight by Stephanie Meyer (I've been told it's really good...It's been a little slow getting into it, but I think it's starting to get good...we'll see!)
Without a Map by Meredith Hall (she's my mentor and this is her memoir...I know it's going to be tough subject matter, but I'm so excited to read it!)
Double Cross by James Patterson (I keep hoping that JP will rediscover that magic that got me hooked on him in the first place!)
Death du Jour by Kathy Reichs (ok, so I was so looking forward to read her stuff because I love Bones, but I'm having a tough time getting through it...but I almost never give up on a book, so I'm hoping that the second half will be better!)
The Curse of the Singles Table: A True Story of 1001 Nights Without Sex by Suzanne Schlosberg (thought I'd switch things up a bit!)
Never Give Up by Tedy Bruschi (I just got this but I've been wanting to read it for a while now...I love Tedy!)
I have seven other books that I just got from the library too, so we'll see how fast I get through these!!
Ok, as a person who already has OCD to begin with, I had to jump in on this! I strongly prefer hardcovers...books by my favorite authors should be hardcover unless it can't be avoided. I am a maniac about my books...if I go in looking for something particular, I have to look at every copy on the shelf to find the perfect copy: no fingerprints, tears, bent pages, scratches, nothing...it has to be perfect. I go a little nuts if the price tag leaves any sticky gook behind...and as someone else mentioned here, I remove the book jacket before reading so I don't muck it up!! And writing in your book.....GASP!!!.....NOOOOOOOOOOO! I must admit to using the occasional post-it to mark a spot, but that's as far as I go!
I have nothing against paperbacks...I clean house at the annual church book sale ever summer near our house in Maine...as in no less than two filled paper boxes! But all favorites should be hardcover and if you can get other hardcovers for cheap, I'm there! As for not being able to leave a bookstore empty-handed, I can't remember the last time I left a bookstore with fewer than 7 books. Like many of you, I'm trying to give the library card a better workout this year, but it's just not the same!!
It's so fun to hear about everyone else's obsessions and crazy book-a-holic behaviors! Keep 'em coming!!
Hi everyone, my name is Katie and I'm a book-a-holic. I am 28 (well 29 next week) and I wish I had as much time to read as I have books I want to read (heck, even books I have!) I try to cram in reading on my lunch break, before bed, and on any days off, but find that I need to get more vacations to be able to read as much as I want:P I'm pretty open genre-wise, but prefer fiction. Favorite authors right now include James Patterson (although I'm sick of all his ghostwriters of late...it's not a bad thing if you don't publish a new book every month, James!), Michael Connelly, Harlan Coben, Emily Giffin, Deirdre Martin, and Amanda Quick. I'm thrilled to be inspired by my mentor, Meredith Hall, who published her first book last year! So, hopefully someday some will include one of MY books in their favorites just as I have hers in mine!
I was reminded of childhood favorites by Linda...I also loved the Trixie Belden books!! I probably still have them, as I have a lot of trouble getting rid of books...you never know when you might want to read them again!! I hope that through my membership here I can explore more authors and genres and books that I never would have discovered on my own. Happy reading everyone!
