It was important in that Goodreads was a year younger then and those who had fallen for it wanted to promote it above the other sites in the poll -- this whole thread is old aside from a few tail end posts.
It hasn't happened again but I'll keep watching for a while. JG's shot is very much as mine was though -- the box covered much of the width of the page and the options drop down was under it and unusable. The ad had a little "x" to close it but simply didn't close -- it got narrower but didn't go away.
An LG TV ad that narrows but does NOT close when I click on Close -- it overlays the drop down box of shelf selections when I'm trying to move a book from one shelf to another.
NO. Please no ads on our bookshelves. PLEASE. Those shelves are "my private space" even if they are being shared with Goodreads members. No ads should show up there. JMO.
I know this was discussed way back when BUT -- I've just been playing with my "cloud" and really wish I could have the "Read" shelf added and it would stick and show up when I have the cloud displayed on my profile page instead of the list of shelves. I don't understand the reasoning for leaving the "Read" shelf out of the cloud -- that seems to me to be the KEY shelf -- especially if someone used only the Goodreads default selection of shelves.
Is this a difficult thing to do? If not -- why not make it an option and do it in such a way that it stays selected as including the read shelf?
AND -- make it so we can keep the cloud view of our shelves on our profile page -- I just discovered that it won't even stay on cloud view when I move from page to page. I really like the extra bit of color the cloud view gives the page.
I realize this is a puny cosmetic thing but it does bother me that it's there but basically only shows up if I go play with it or someone else plays with it -- it's there so why not make it an option we can utilize without having to reset it all the time?
Just had my first experience not being able to add a new shelf -- obviously I'm lucky to have not encountered the problem previously as I've seen the comments here earlier. Not so good news as this bug seems to be spreading as opposed to going away.
Another issue which may or may not be realted is that I've discovered my star ratings and the info under the particular edition of a book I have shelved is not showing when browsing the list of all editions of the book -- I final;ly discovered which edition it should have been by the fact it had no "switch to this edition" link on it -- therefore it was the edtion I had on the shelf -- very strange. I also discovered that one of the two editions of that book which should have shown on my shelves was still on the shelves but the other had disappeared. Are we no longer able to shelve two different edtions of one book? I have quite a few books which I had previously shelved two edtions. Haven't checked to see if they are all down to a single edition but I certaily hope not. Will keep an eye on progress. TIA.
All million or so GR members should say likewise -- but I can only speak for myself and say I'm glad Constant Reader and company found a home here.

Well, apart from the account page and inbox being open to access, I wouldn't have been quite so fast on the panic button messages. Set off the alarm bells and set me wondering who might be able to see what I was seeing since I was locked out of GR otherwise.
Hmmm -- exciting things for quotes, eh? Sounds interesting to me.

Me, too. I went into panic mode and got to Goodreads by a nefarious route and fired off a couple e-mails -- scary business when I got on through that back door, too, because my account page was available as was my inbox -- not signed in -- not asked for password. THAT should definitely NOT be so. Very weird.
Just now got back to Goodreads -- I had even closed the browser and tried to simply get back to the GR main page --no luck that way either.
Lisa and Summer -- picked up this idea -- thanks. I had dropped a couple of bookstores as I was overwhelmed with posts when they were on my friend list but now I can follow and check out their offerings at will! great use for the following feature.
Makes sense then -- as long as the two are congruent in their entirety, there's no need for having it in both places. Thanks for clarifying it, Otis.
I don't see the point actually as it is simply a duplication of the books link under the explore dropdown. Is it supposed to be different somehow?
Count me as one who finds this truly wonderful news. I have had a couple of severe depressions over the years -- and I know how difficult it is to pull oneself up and back over the edge of that abyss and into the world again. So glad you came to Goodreads -- and books and talking about them is a grand way to connect with the world in general in my opinion.
Yes, I was looking at date read and flipped the toggle as I said. But the book only came back when I clicked on the 2009 shelf and then back again to the read shelf which was in the most recently read back to the oldest date read. When I saw the missing books in place on the read shelf, I clicked over to review view to see if they stayed in place and they did. I've been back and forth to groups and posting and back to the shelves -- they are still showing as they should. But there were a total of six books that went away and returned -- inexplicably -- as I said -- something odd is happening.
I just went to the main view and flipped the toggle to show books read by oldest to most recent and then back to most recent to the oldest -- the book still is not appearing on my shelf. Now this is just weird.
ETA: I immediately went back and looked -- still not there. I clicked on my 2009 shelf. Not only was the Daisy Miller there but I discovered four or five others which had also gone missing from the READ shelf. I clicked immediately back to the read shelf and lo and behold the missing books reappeared on the READ shelf when it loaded that time. We must have gremlins on GR is all I know. But at the moment I have my missing half dozen books back but wow -- this is not reassuring that this is happening.
I read a book Daisy Miller and Other Stories - Henry James in April and it was on the READ shelf and showing on the covers view just fine. Suddenly it vanished. I can search the title and the book I read -- correct edition and cover comes up as being in my shelves and the review is there and all the info. It is listed on several shelves where I placed it. But it isn't showing on the READ shelf in any view.
Is this the same thing which others have been experiencing or is this another kink in the puzzle?
I really don't like that the book has vanished from the list and as others said elsewhere, i really hate the thought of other books going poof and I'll never know what disappeared.
The pink makes the text difficult to read. If it were intentional, a yellow of just slightly lower intensity would be a better option -- I personlly could live with a bit more color but it was a shock to encounter that pink!
Shannon -- that may well be -- thanks for pointing it out.
As for the box location -- I prefer it open either at the top or bottom depending on how we sort -- if we set new posts to be seen at top then it should open at top and if new posts appear at the end/bottom then the box follows likewise. BUT -- I want the box to only open in either locale when I click on it -- that box open at all times just wastes space no matter which way I sort my posts.
The box is next to the most recent post whether you have that at the top or at the bottom. Why would you want it at the top if you had the posts sorted with the latest post at the bottom? Or am I not understanding your question? The date is "shuffled" for a reason -- somepeople want the thread to run oldest to newest from top to bottom while others like to "toggle" the date and keep the posts oldest to newest running from the bottom up to the top of the page. When answering the most recent post, the box being closest to that post makes sense, yes?
