1 I agree with Brendan and Paul.

Trolls thrive on attention, much like some kids in middle school who need all the attention - good or bad - at any cost. They are just not worth the frustration.

1 I read that thread, too.

1 I was re-shelfing and all of a sudden I was inside some other people's profiles (It even said "hi Christal", "Hi yulia" etc in the upper right corner, I could only see their shelves etc)

Then all of a sudden (after logging out and re-logging in) I noticed I had gotten all of Rivka's four latest adds in my "read-list".

Very strange! :)
1 Ulf - re the foreign characters:

I raised the issue some time ago, and it is underway. I am eagerly awaiting the solution to that too! :)

1 Great idea, Otis! :)

I would love
-author pseudonyms
-half-star ratings
-customshelves in groups
-ordering of to-read list

and would love a more advanced search function
such as the ability to search by author and/ or title.
Search function (2 new)

1 I can't remember if this has been discussed, but I have a few wishes for the "Search books and authors" function

1. A more advanced search where you can choose (in a drop-down menu, eg) if you're searching for an author AND/OR title etc

2. Alternative suggestions in case you don't spell the title/name correctly
Eg I entered "Michael Featherstone" and nothing turned up as his name actually is Mike Featherstone.

thank you :)

1 Oh! I love this feature!

Also, Rivka - thank you for those hilarious quotes :)

1 Like Sherri said so beautifully - I read a lot of different genres and so many of the books, I have nobody to discuss them with.

I love how it is OK to be both a reader with high standards AND completely goofy - at the same time.

I absolutely love finding someone in a completely different geographical setting who has read and loved some of the same books I have, and to hear their opinions on those books.

But most of all I love finding new books and authors, books that I might not have ever heard of without GR (as many books never get translated into Swedish and even though the number of books in English in our bookstores steadily increase).

You said it Lena - my inner book geek is thriving on this site. :)

Thank you Otis and Elizabeth & Co!

1 Well said, Sherri.
I felt pretty guilty too, until I realized that there were some who were just "collecting".

Thanks Otis, and great feature-to-come!

1 Ruth - I don't think they get any message or such. I've rejected a couple of people with hundreds of friends and very few books. So far, nobody has commented on my decision to do so.
:)

1 I've dropped a couple of people too that added no new reviews in several months, but 4-5 new "friends" every day.
I'm not going to start dropping people who're just taking a break from GR for whatever reason (ie doesn't add any new books), but when that same person simultaneously keeps adding to his/her friends list, we're simply not on the same page anymore.

And, no, if someone was to decide my books/ reviews didn't interest them anymore, I can't say I'd spend the evening crying over it.
There are far too many interesting readers on this site for that! :)

1 Hey Abigail,

I asked for this feature myself a couple of months ago but were given some excellent reasons as to why that might not work out (see Rivkas and Lisas ansers above.)

However, someone (Rivka?) suggested I might rename my shelfs into eg: "history - medieval", "history - WW1", "history - WW2" etc
I still haven't done that, but I thought I'd pass that idea along. :-)

***Re-reading the thread, I just saw that Lisa suggested that too. I still think it's a great idea though.***

1 Seriously, Cogonmen - she was just asking a question that was important to her (and I dare say that a few of us "older" ones have been wondering about that ourselves). If it had been as obvious as you seem to suggest, she wouldn't have asked - would she? This netiquette thing is really difficult sometimes!

I'd hate to see this site become one of those sites where people of any age or background are afraid to add or ask something out of fear of seeming ..."unsophisticated", too young, or too old or whatever.

1 I admire both of your patience with your hair. I've had mine waist-length at the longest, it is currently a couple of inches longer than the photo I sent you, Tracy.

Well, it is time for me to give my computer some TLC (ie to vaccuum out the dust in one of the fans...I would hate it to overheat and crash)
I shall follow the remainder of this discussion in the morning.

Good luck, Sherri. Been there, done that, wish I could've burnt the t-shirt.
Good evening to all of you.

1 :-D Sherri!

And now, Tracy. You can't say something like that without telling us the other two! (BTW, the unrestrained laugh happens to be one of my trademarks, too. That, and the inability to not talk a lot.)

Ah, double negations. Be-a-utiful.

1 I have to say it happens every now and then to mee to, usually early afternoons and onwrads my time (ie mornings and onwards US time).

Everything else seems to be working those times, so I guess it's something at Goodreads.

This is for you Sherri:

Polynesia: Memory loss in parrots.

(I KNOW...it's bad) :)
Sep 24, 2007 04:42AM

1 Ah, but it is still possible to access all the bookshelves, just not the frontpage or inbox.

But the first time it happened, it left me absolutely dumbstruck by the computer. No Goodreads? What, does that mean I actually have to venture out into...the real world? And like, talk to people? Goodreads, come back!

1 It'd be great to have one empty slot to add other bookselling websites than there are today. Eg, for a Swede www.adlibris.com would be a more logic choice to add.

I'm just thinking it'd be great if we, the users, could add sites ourselves so you guys don't have to keep track of every bookselling website on the planet.
What I'm suggesting is a "slot" that just shows up on our personal profiles as I am sure the French/ Japanese/ Brazilian /whatever users have other sites they would prefer.

(Sorry - I'm really frustrated because I don't know how to explain it properly!)

1 None of the "Get At"-options are ideal for me as a European (Swedish) resident. I know Amazon has international sites, but that still means expensive international shipping.

Would there be any way to add your own site under the "More..."-button ?

I'm guessing you're going to reach the end of your to-do list sometime next century :)
