I love the new visual representation for books without covers, they look so much more like proper books right now!
It's all in the details, right? I think the red bookmark does it. But whatever it is, the new graphics does wonders to the visual side of "my books". Now, if only the "book cover not on hand" jpgs on the update feed were updated a bit...
I like setting my homepage to a review feed from friends and following and reading straight through all the updates. It's great and I thank you for that. It's just that clicking on the "add comment" link every time I want to rate a review, having to open the review in a separate tab (even though I already read it all) gets tedious fast. I'd love to have a "like it" link, right there - in the feed, below each review. Would adding this feature be too much of a fuss? Is it doable?
Click on the "add to my books button" then you can add it to any shelves you please OR you can make your 'owned' shelf exclusive. With 'owned' as exclusive the most convinient way to add books is to use the small the drop down menu below the 'add to my books button'
I've manually added a bunch of obscure polish books this weekend. As everytime I'm done entering all the info, it takes me to a review page so that I can post a review and add it to my bookshelves. Which is great, other than I don't seem to be able to add it to my bookshelves at that time. The shelf chooser, or whatever you call it, doesn't work for me there :/ Throws me out of the review page.
Thought you might want to know.
It would be nice if some sort of message showed up, when merging is complete. The site does its thing, the page reloads, but nothing more than that happens. And it would be nice to know if it was a success or not. Other than it works great, thanks!
When you are in the main view, click on order so that books are lined up with #1 at the top. Then for sure you'll be able to edit it.
If you don't click at the drop down menu under the "Add to my books" button, but on the button itself - you can add as many bookshelves as you want (exclusive and non-exlusive) and a review if you wish.
Jimmy wrote: "Friends should only "like" a review if they really do like it. Not if they just like the person."Well yeah, but we have no influence how others vote. Nor should we have such infuence.
Re #1, I quote: The default sorting algorithm on Goodreads uses a variety of factors to determine the most interesting reviews. We won't share the exact special sauce with you, but the ingredients are: length of the review, number of people who liked it, recency of the review, popularity of the reviewer (i.e. number of people who have liked reviews by that person across all books).
you can find it on each book's page, there are 2 options: "sort by default" and "sort by date", default has a "(?)" next to it, which upon click, brings out this explanation.
It's happening to me*, sometimes. It happens only in one place** (shelf chooser on individual book page) and only for the books that I have previously shelved (if I'm adding a new one it's all fine).
Say Harry Potter Book 1. If I want to change my exclusive shelves from under "my review" section under that HP book, it's going to act out. There the radio buttons show up only next to currently-reading, to-read, and read. The rest of the exclusive shelves is left with check boxes.
Does that help?

I'm having exactly the same problem as you do Lisa. I finally resorted to adjusting my account settings. But I'd prefer that check box to work....Here's another thread on this bug: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2349...
Haha! There's your problem! Taking away the prize and not naming winners (but simply congratulating upon completion) would kill the crazy competitiveness and make the challenge more pleasant. Trust me. It works perfect in our group, we have tons of challenges and very little trouble. But if you insist on prizes and winners - then set strict rules (yes: the adding books to shelves, yes: the short reviews, yes:reading books with a set page count only), make them work for their prize. And maybe pick a less attractive prize.
There used to be that feature that would allowe me to see what books, not currently on my bookshelves were popular among my frinends: http://www.goodreads.com/book/friend
Now instead of that I get "Page not found. The resource you requested doesn't exist."
The link to that site/feed is still up (above the browse-books menu on the right) http://www.goodreads.com/book/popular, could you look into it? Is this feature being taken out alltogether? I don't use it often, but I would visit that page once in a blue moon...

Maybe I just wasn't doing it right... How embarassing. (Because I seriosly doubt there was a bug and it got fixed in the meantime)
