Bugged book (8 new)

1 Otis FTW!

Thanks, was really going nuts trying to figure what had gone wrong.... ^_^

1 The book A Spell for Chameleon seems to be bugged.
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/76664...

No matter what I do, I do not see a right-hand column on the page. This means no book data, no google ad (horrors!), no popular bookshelves, no other editions, no people who viewed this....

The right-hand area works fine for me on every other book, but I don't see it there.

1 Thanks, Rivka. I was wondering how to bring this up.

1 Books like that are always trouble. It's very hard to know if they're the same thing or not without being personally familiar with them. >.<

Anyway, thanks for the heads up! I've just separated them into two different books, and that should take care of it.

Give a holler when the next problem crops up! ^_^

1 No problems editing my profile on XP/Firefox.

The best wave-a-dead-chicken suggestion I have is to try logging out (of Goodreads) and back in again, in case that shakes something loose.

Beyond that, try a different browser, if you can. Try Safari on a different machine (to see if there's a problem with just that machine).

1 Argh! Now you're going to have me digging all through my library for good quotes!

1 There are two date fields attached to a book. One is when that edition was published, and the other is for when the book was first published. The latter defaults to the former, and not many records have been updated at all.

1 That's not greed, that's "enlightened self interest."

1 There is the thought that the estate might want to claim the page/profile and use it to announce upcoming reprints and the such....
Co-authors? (8 new)
Nov 13, 2007 12:11PM

1 I think I've seen it twice now.

So, not too often. I'd kind of say don't change it because a record displaying one out of three authors is more likely to attract fixing than a record displaying two out of three authors. ;P

Another thing showed up yesterday:
"Combine editions" only happens off of Author #1. I had trouble figuring out where the spare edition I was seeing was disappearing to until I realized that the record had the authors reversed from the normal order.

So, could we get some sort of way around that? I'd love a place where I could work on anything that lists, say, Steven Barnes *and* Larry Niven as the authors, despite order.

1 Now that's a threat!
Nov 12, 2007 05:05PM

1 Ah, hah. Good to know what's going on there.
Co-authors? (8 new)
Nov 12, 2007 12:35PM

1 Two things:

1) Even if everything is entered in properly, the search result pages only seem to show the first author, even if everyone shows up when viewing the book itself.

2) Some of the data seems to be really bad. I've found a couple books with three authors, and only one shows up on the book. When editing the book, I find that the first and third authors are there. When I input the blank second author, everything shows up fine.

1 Lisa, the image works fine for me in Firefox 2.0.0.9 (all I use) on your page.

There are occasional images that seem to have problems. I remember an old thread where this came up, but I can't seem to find it now.

But, since we're having variable results here, let's check something:
The top item here
http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/871...
should be Spacehounds of IPC and I show a cover image.

When I go to the book
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/19145...
I instead see "1914572-m-1190254487".

(And, yeah, "Doc" Smith needs a lot of cleanup....)

Something I find odd is that this shows a someone's uncropped photo of a book
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/28362...
but if I hit "edit book" I am prompted to upload an image without having to delete the old one.
book covers (11 new)
Nov 08, 2007 04:20PM

1 Well, switch back. The cover is attached to a particular record/ISBN.

Two ways to get a cover: 1-if the audiobook has a cover identical to the book you just switched to, go to that edition, save the file to your hard drive (right-click on image, select 'save image as'), and then upload it again for your edition (yes, I've done this). 2-find it on-line, save the image, upload it here.

1 That's good, right? (If not, try re-reading my earlier post.)

Just trying to figure out your tone, John, happy, or alarmed?
book covers (11 new)

1 They seem to have taken it out a little while ago, which is just as well, as the mouseover boxes kept appearing far away from the cover I was mousing over, so it'd go away before I got there.

Right now there is only one cover per book/DB record, so a 'cover' and an 'edition' are the same thing (despite that there can be alternate covers per edition/ISBN, but that's a thread I started some time ago).
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show_grou...

Lara, you can still switch editions/covers. Make sure you are on the edition you currently have, click on the "see all" link for other editions, and then that list will have "switch to this cover" links. A little harder to get to, but a lot more reliable.
Edited posts (25 new)

1 I would recommend auto marking a post as having been edited. My favorite systems will say "This post has been edited by _ # times." One system also allowed you to give an (optional) reason for the edit that would appear with the edit notice.

And definitely give us a few minutes grace. I often find myself going back and tweaking something right after I post.

1 Oh, I know this would take a lot of work, and I don't even have a good idea of just how I'd like to see it implemented.

I'm just morally outraged that I can't show off what my book looks like....

1 Okay, just double-checked the three Bantam Star Trek books I happen to have around.

The Fate of the Phoenix: ISBN 0-553-24638-0
This matches my copy of the book. Note the "Star Trek" banner at the top, and the font the title is in.

Vulcan!: ISBN 0-553-24633-X
There are two editions of the book currently. My cover has the art of the other edition, and the same font and banner as Fate above (which doesn't match either shown cover).

The Price of the Phoenix: ISBN 0-553-24635-6
My cover is in the same layout style as Fate again, and the cover art does not match either cover in the database.

Also note that the database lists the last two as being published by Spectra (which would really be Bantam/Spectra), whereas my copies are just published by Bantam Books (no Spectra logo anywhere).

Oh, and my copy of Dreadnought (ISBN 0345375564) doesn't agree with the cover given. Mine doesn't have the solid title block (the photo goes all the way up), and the title is up top.
