1 If there was one thing that I could change about Goodreads it would be all the reviews that are really plot summaries and don't have them flagged as 'spoilers'. I like reviews very much. Its quite annoying to go to the explore/people/reviews list and find a new reviewer who has hundreds of reviews and find they are all just about the story and the only opinion is Very Good.

And how do you intend to do that?

He gets a lot of speaking engagments which is why he likes the story kept alive.

1 That's how I feel. I can't see a single advantage to melding GR and FB. How am I supposed to chat to my real life friends if I have to take into account all my GR buddies who know nothing of my personal life? I don't want my book buddies involved in my day-to-day life.

1 So if GR is used from the FB tab, its just like one application on one site.

1 Ok, thank you. I will make a friend request.

1 I would like to know how to get hold of a moderator who has a private profile? I have a problem with a member and would like to discuss it with her.

1 It never worked properly for me at all.

1 I'm with the others. A search engine that searches on title would be awesome.

1 I think Donna's idea of putting the lists in a sidebar is a good idea. I would like to see the reviews themselves being the most prominent.

1 Cynthia, you could start the group yourself.

1 Tracy O said it first and best. Wading through the same old junk books that Amazon tries to push on you before you get to what fellow readers are actually reading and reviewing is less than enthralling.

1 I would prefer Goodreads update mail to go to my inbox as well.

1 If you are looking for people with similar authors to you and listing so few books yourself comparing books wouldn't really help you. Especially if the people you are looking at also are listing very few of their read books. Actually in that case, nothing much is going to bring two people with similar interests together if they are both listing so little.
1 Very nice.

1 Thanks Otis. Just a couple of points:

1. SCIENCEFICTION SQRL the original newsletter and the one the link points to are exactly the same. I checked with my emailed one.

2. Dottie edited at least one of her comments so it reads a great deal less 'lively' than it did when it was first posted.

3. Laura's issue is not addressed.
At the moment there is a debate going on with the librarians about whether people should be allowed to add personal quotes that don't come from books. I have not seen any Goodreads rules on this nor on whether librarians can decide on one themselves.

1 I can't see what you object to, Dottie. Petra was asking of admin if this site is basically an American one and she used your quote to illustrate that at least one person does think it is. You were not misquoted or misinterpreted nor can I see how the words quoted were taken out of context at all. If it was because you were talking about the political poll, Petra also discusses that.

I thought that Petra did her best to explain her position to you and you came back at her like a very angry parent wanting to put an erring child on the spot and make them explain every last bit of their behavior.

As Laura says no one would have connected the quote to you and even if they had why would you think that would make anyone want to avoid you? Because you said the site was an American one? What is offensive about that? I must say though that your extreme reaction is something that would make at least one person avoid commenting on any of your posts in the future. I wouldn't want to face that kind of ire if you took against something I had said.

1 Lisa - I came back here because I just saw that link on a new thread in the Next Best Book Club. I went to it and was amazed at the beautiful book and thought what a lovely idea for promotion. Fun too. So I came back to mention it and found that just a few minutes ago you had beaten me to it. I find that a very acceptable means of promotion, don't you?

1 I do agree that aggressive promotion can be its own worst enemy. I don't think complacency and tolerating people trying to manipulate the system is acceptable - I will just have to stand out from the crowd in this opinion.

However, I don't think measures against this type of author would be appropriate (or possible) but I do think positive action of a series of acceptable ways, maybe even a Goodreads programme, in which Goodreads-authors books are drawn to more people's attention. If the present methods were satisfactory, there wouldn't be these attempts at inflation and puffery. I can't think of a program but I am sure there are cleverer minds than mine out there belonging to authors who probably have in mind some ideas for promotion already.

1 The Next Best Book Club group does its own policing. It has a Spammers' Hell for those that go in for inappropriate self-promotion of their own books.
