On July 6, 2002, sixteen-year-old Alisa Kaplan woke, sick and disoriented, in the passenger seat of her car. She'd been at a party the night before, but there was a big blank hole where her own memories of the night should have been. So what happened at that party? Why couldn't she remember anything about the night before?
As the appalling, terrifying details of that night began to surface, it ignited a media frenzy and a storm of controversy with Alisa trapped at the center: A straight-laced, straight-A student, sexually assaulted by three male friends-all caught on videotape.
Her fight for justice pitted her against some of Southern California's most powerful families, and made her the target of a devastating smear campaign. Despite the evidence, the corruption and humiliation of her first trial resulted in a hung jury, and sent her spiraling into the oblivion of meth addiction.
But on the threshold of her last chance and darkest moment, Alisa discovered: There was still room for hope.
Now she recounts her gripping story of transforming from victim to survivor: How she got a second chance, broke her silence, and found faith and grace in God on her way to rebuilding a stronger, meaningful life.
Courageous and heartbreaking, Alisa's hope-filled account demonstrates that redemption is always possible, and forgiveness can transform anyone.

Reba Riley brings the light for seekers of all paths, reminding us that every journey of transformation begins exactly where we are. If the 'Pray' in Eat Pray Love had a gutsy, wise, funny little sister who'd never been to India, it would be Post-Traumatic Church Syndrome." —Elizabeth Gilbert, author, Eat, Pray, Love and The Signature of All ThingsView Details »
"Whatever your beliefs or lack thereof, whether you pay heed to a savior or a spirit animal, you should read this moving, funny, thoughtful book. Reba Riley has traveled the unlikely mystic's path and come back with an enormously entertaining, immensely hopeful report. "—A.J. Jacobs, author, The Year of Living Biblically and My Life as an Experiment
"PTCS is a brilliant, emotional and audacious rampage through religious sensibility, an exploration I recommend without hesitation. Enjoy!" —Wm. Paul Young, author, The Shack, Cross Roads
"Reba Riley is a natural-born storyteller and writer who I expect to be reading for many years to come." —Brian D. McLaren, author/speaker at brianmclaren.net
“If your soul has ever doubted, if your feet have ever lost their way, if your halo's always just a little askew, or if your heart has been wounded by a faith community, Reba Riley's humorous, honest memoir about exploring the ‘Godiverse’ is just the thing for you.” —Sarah Thebarge, author, The Invisible Girls
"Post-Traumatic Church Syndrome is real. Been there done that. If you have been there too, this book is going to let you know you are not alone. Prepare to be encouraged to leave outright abuse of spiritual power and dogma of the kind that kills the soul. Prepare to survive. Courageous and wonderful, Reba Riley to the rescue!" —Frank Schaeffer, author, Why I Am an Atheist Who Believes in God
“Riley’s book is so compelling; beautifully written, exceedingly funny, and refreshingly honest. As she described her journey of spiritual and physical healing, I rooted for her with every page. Riley’s story is also compelling because it is our story, our journey. We can identify with her spiritual pain, her questions, her prejudices, her fears. Her experience proves that if we are willing to open ourselves up and listen, we too can find God everywhere and know the Love that is for us all. It is a book of profound hope.”— Kristen Vincent, author, A Bead and a Prayer: A Beginner’s Guide to Protestant Prayer Beads
“Post-Traumatic Church Syndrome is a literary and philosophical triumph. Reba Riley reveals the strength of spirit through the vulnerability of flesh with tears, laughter and soul-stirring moments of profound revelation. Her first book—certainly not her last—is so much more than a memoir about faith; it’s a celebration of all that defines the human condition.” —Christian Piatt, author of postChristian: What’s left? Can we fix it? Do we care? and Pregmancy
“Written with beckoning eloquence and humor, Reba Riley describes an amazing interfaith journey through the depth of her broken humanity in a quest for healing and the face of God. Post-Traumatic Church Syndrome is a most valuable and inspirational guide to those on a path toward enlightenment, and especially to those seeking healing from spiritual abuse. It should be on the shelves of every counseling center and divinity school.” —Franklyn Schaefer, author, Defrocked, and United Methodist minister
"Moments of laughing and tears. It provided much needed closure for me in many ways. I love Reba Riley and her heart and work. I'm honored to be her teacher and also, through her book, her student. When you drop your Diet Coke can or yesterday’s newspaper in the recycling bin, where does it go? Probably halfway around the world—where your trash becomes, literally, someone’s treasure. In Junkyard Planet, Adam Minter offers eye-opening insights into how American refuse drives a vast $500 billion industry that reaches every corner of the globe, with profound effects on both our economy and our environment.
Minter is a veteran journalist with unmatched access to and insight on the waste industry—but even better, he has the explanatory gifts and an eye for detail worthy of a John McPhee or William Langewiesche. He takes us not merely behind the scenes, but into the bowels of giant facilities that process a jumbo jet’s worth of trash every day, as well as the boardrooms of global companies who squeeze billions of dollars from stuff we leave at the curb. Junkyard Planet reveals how “going green” has become a lucrative and internationally influential business—and also how environmentally abusive the process can be at the nitty-gritty end: Minter also shows us the back streets where Chinese workers melt down the circuits of tossed-out cellphones.
Tracing the export of America’s garbage—and the massive profits that China and other rising nations earn from it—Minter spins a tale that’s both engaging, colorful, and troubling. Our profligacy with stuff brings home the decline of the American economy and the ascent of the developing world. Junkyard Planet reveals that Americans might need to learn a smarter way to take out the trash.

YOU'VE GOT WHAT IT TAKES TO BE GREAT (online preview is available*)
"Debut authors Lowell and Lola’s thoroughly researched, compelling self-help work focuses on undoing 'fixed mindset thinking'...An inventive, entertaining mix of history, research and self-help."--Kirkus Reviews
...From Isaac Newton to the Nazis to the unbounded potential of the 21st century, this hybrid of self-help guide and historical document explores the concept of the “fixed mindset”—the cultural, intellectual and emotional forces that encourage people to limit themselves from growing in their accomplishments, abilities and self-esteem. Lowell and Lola frame two camps: those who assume a fixed mindset approach toward life and whose intelligence and abilities are therefore inherently unchangeable and those who embrace the notion of personal growth. The authors explain: “Instead of accepting difficult challenges, learning from their failures, and sometimes being pleasantly surprised when they succeed, people with the fixed mindset only undertake challenges at which they are sure they will be successful. By doing so, they continuously confirm the level of ability they believe they have, and further reinforce their beliefs about their lack of talent.” The book elegantly transitions from scientifically documented studies and historical anecdotes to exercises designed to help participants understand the psychological blockages they carry within themselves. The penultimate section, a workbook, includes prompts that encourage readers to write down ideas that will help them break through their self-imposed barriers. The clearly written text is engaging both as a self-help guide and as a striking compendium of facts. Nazi Germany, for example, began involuntarily sterilizing people only after finding precedent in American practices of the period. The unusual perspectives on geniuses such as Einstein, Newton and others provide a welcome change from typical portraits...

What is this life about? What is the mind? Why do we resist change? These are the questions we lock away in a tall tower like some inconvenient relative whose ‘lost her marbles’ and become an embarrassment to the family. Perhaps you’ve been asking ‘comfortable’ questions and avoiding the hard-hitting ones, preferring to hide away from them and pretend they don’t exist. We hope someone, somewhere, will put it all right for us. They won’t!View Details »

There’s something wonderful to discover if we care to take a look. In The Gospel of Mark—Eternity and Readiness, author George Andrew presents a look at this intersection of eternity and readiness. He proposes the lifeblood of faith as the sole root of readiness, and he offers his views and perceptions of the life of Jesus as told through the words of the oldest gospel. It shows how Mark allows a life of thought, action, and essence to unfold, and calls believers to a muscular Christianity — one that is strong and of today and helps address the spiritual exhaustion, shallowness, and the questioning torpidity of the time.

Set against the backdrop of the art world in India, and interwoven with reminiscences of her own unusual life and marriage, Juliet relates a compelling story: the couple’s unplanned adoption of Neema, son of their maid, Poonam; their endeavours to have his autism diagnosed and treated; and Neema’s emergence into adulthood as a valuable – though still dependent – human being. The book also delves into Neema’s background and tormented early life with his dysfunctional family, thereby touching upon some of the more lurid aspects of developing world poverty and introducing into the narrative an assorted cast of characters, some appealing and some appalling, but all of them colourful. Poonam’s story of abuse, self-destruction and faltering redemption – at once poignant and astounding – forms an important strand of the book and is related with special insight and frequent exasperation. Not only does the author tell a story of autism quite unlike the many already told, she also places it in an Indian and South Asian context. In the spirit of A Street Cat Named Bob and Dewey comes a mother’s touching, true account of how a rescue cat named Billy transformed her autistic boy’s life.
Louise Booth and her husband had always dreamed of having a child. But when their son Fraser was born, Louise immediately knew something was wrong. Fraser was an angry child, prone to frequent screaming fits. When the family moved to the Balmoral Estate (Queen Elizabeth’s summer residence), where Louise’s husband had been hired to be the Queen’s electrician, Louise plummeted into depression, worn down by her son’s constant needs. At eighteen months, Fraser was diagnosed with autism and hypotonia, a muscle tone condition that affected his ability to walk and use his hands. Louise and her husband Chris were given the devastating news that Fraser would never go to a mainstream school, and it seemed all hope was lost.
Then came Billy. A grey cat who’d been found in an abandoned house and left at a shelter, Billy came home with the family, purred, and laid his paws across Fraser’s lap. The two became inseparable from that moment on, and slowly but surely, Billy transformed Fraser’s life.
Within two years of Billy joining their family, Louise watched her son evolve from being a toddler prone to anxiety, tantrums, and sudden emotional meltdowns into a much calmer, less moody child with a bright future. In their home on the beautiful Balmoral Estate, Billy still acts as Fraser’s guardian, never leaving his side at mealtimes and bedtimes or whenever he’s feeling low. Their profound bond has immeasurably improved both their lives and the family’s, bringing them countless hilarious and touching moments along the way.
A Sunday Times bestseller in the UK, When Fraser Met Billy is “a story of quiet, enigmatic triumph” (The Daily Mail), a powerful testament to a family’s love for their child, and a treat for animal lovers everywhere. Change of Heart: Justice, Mercy, and Making Peace with My Sister's Killer

In her dying moments, Nancy wrote a message in her own blood at the crime scene: a heart shape and the letter "u," last words of love.View Details »
When the killer, a local teenager, was arrested for the murders, he denied responsibility for the crime and showed no remorse. After the murderer was tried, convicted and sentenced, Bishop determined to forgive and then forget him. Bishop became a public defender, an outspoken opponent of capital punishment, and a supporter of the sentence her sister's killer received: juvenile life without the possibility of parole. All the while, she never once spoke the name of her sister's killer aloud, never tried to engage with him.
Then she met a law professor who gave her a book espousing a radical idea: that as Christians, we have an obligation to work to reconcile with those who have harmed us. Bishop challenged the book's author about that idea, and was challenged in turn to take seriously the prayer of Jesus on the cross and move beyond simple forgiveness to the hard work of personal reconciliation.
Change of Heart is the story of that uneven journey to confronting and reconciling with a murderer. The book takes on the larger issues of restorative justice, life sentences, and incarceration in the criminal justice system. It unflinchingly acknowledges the personal cost of advocating for mercy for people convicted of serious crimes.
In the end, the book is a story of moving beyond mere forgiveness to the deeper waters of redemption and grace.

Shänne Sands lived and worked in India in the 1950s and this book of superb literary prose is her evocative account of a city and a country in those years.
An exquisitely written masterpiece. Highly rated by India Book Reviews:
"Sands captures the lives of people from across castes, religions and ethnicity. People who were born in Bombay and those who made it their home much late in life. She talks about the lively Hindu festivals, ornate Muslim palaces, Parsi houses and cuisine, Anglo Indian men and women, Jesuit priests, tribal women, fakirs and monks, village folk, prostitutes, dabha-wallahs, street urchins, and more. Her first wedding to a rich Parsi, and then her travel by ship to U.K. and back, and then another wedding in Bombay… all make for great reading. There are so many details that come through in her work that even people who’ve been living in Bombay for years will be surprised to come across."
Everyone who reads this book loves its literary quality.

PASS BY PILGRIM, PASS BY
Holiness for me in India could not be found within the walls of Temples or Mosques. Holiness came with hot, rushing air. With the white foam on top of giant waves pushing the Arabian sea across the sands of the Fair Bay.
It came with feelings and smells and sights. With the humble sweeper in her torn sari. In the faces of the poor who know starvation is always near.
Holiness for me was not the bluff and thunder of the gods, but the moving river edged with palms. It was the Ghats and the grey goat tied up outside a shack ready to become a sacrifice at a Muslim festival.
Holiness is the way people live out their destinies without a grudge against humanity for being born and dying a whole life away on a railway station platform. Holiness is the benign old man who asks for nothing and children’s cheeks are touched with it, although covered with flies.
It comes in the night as the sky breaks out in a glitter of stars and it is the guest of pilgrims going their different ways towards the mansion in heaven with many rooms.
It is in the songs of eastern poems. In the talk of saints and fakir. It is in the offering from human beings to the Lord of all creation as they sit in hut or palace.
Holiness is the praise and passion of those who care. It is in the musical chime of flute and drum and tinkling bangles. An unbroken bond between the creation and the Lord.
It comes as a handmaiden to serve the saints and dwells at the feet of those who seek the company of God.
Pilgrims pass by on their way to Benares to do penance for their sins and to eat cow dung and drink cow urine before they are given absolution. As heads are shaved some will mock others weep. And lions will tread their way in the forests.
Lamas pass by in saffron robes, sweet smelling joss slowly burns as holiness becomes the perfect harmony of mind and body.
It is the beauty of the lotus flower, the fish, the lake, the mountain and it lies on the horizon’s brim, where it waits to be reborn again and again.
For India Mahatma Gandhi cried love. Pandit Nehru cried Unity. And in the blazing sunshine a wild, naked man cries in Arabic ‘Un Al Huq, Un Al Huq,’ I am the truth, I am God.’ For me holiness was the gratitude I felt having witnessed such things.

Composed from true life events and 10 years of memoirs, This Shadow Follows Me, is a riveting fiction novel of Alec Andrews and the friends and family that faltered around him.
The story begins at the death bed of Andrew's ex boyfriend Troy who was dying of AIDS complications. Alec tries to tell his life story in hopes that he can make up for all that he could not tell Troy when he was alive. Alec’s life story lurks with the self destruction of a family that drove him to crucify himself, in hopes they would be correct with their religious beliefs. From a homophobic family to a homophobic upbringing, Alec fights to find himself free from the illusions that capture him.
Alec is ultimately haunted by a dream where he took his own life. In the dream he killed himself, only to be told he would have to live his life over again without making the same mistakes, but not able to remember the previous mistakes to stop them from coming true.
Will Alec and the other characters have the strength to create a life worth living or destroy themselves in the process? This novel is a history of coming out of the closet, being gay and proud, and learning to respect those that are different.
Will Alec and the ones around him find their ways to claw out of the pain of life? Find out in this fictional and painfully honest story and memoir of This Shadow Follows Me. (Suggested Reading Age 18+) [close]

Eighteen-year-old Angeli doesn't "fit in." She's never been on a single date, and she lives vicariously through an online world of storytelling. With the pressures of choosing a practical future path bearing down, she needs a drastic change. Too old to run away from home, she opts instead to embark on a solo 2-month road trip. But her freedom is tempered by loneliness - and anxiety tests her resolve as she comes face-to-face with her quirky internet friends.
Aside from contracting mono and repeatedly getting herself lost, Angeli's adventure is mired by more unforeseen glitches - like being detained by Canadian authorities, and a near-death experience at the hands of an overzealous amateur wrestler. Her odyssey is complicated further when she unwittingly earns the affections of two young men. One a privileged martial artist; the other a talented techie with a colorful past.
Bewildered by the emotions they stir, Angeli spurns the idea of a doomed long-distance relationship. But she is unprepared for the determination of her hopeful suitors. In the wake of her refusal, one man will betray her, and the other will prove himself worthy of a place in her future.
Angeli sets off in search of a better understanding of herself, the world, and her place in it. What she finds is an impractical love, with the potential to restore her faith in happy endings.
A true story with an unapologetically honest outlook on life, love, faith, and adventure - Once Upon A Road Trip is a coming-of-age memoir.
*An unusual true account, written largely in 3rd person.
*Book Club questions included at the back of the book.
*Recommended for ages 14 and up.

Lucky Go Happy is an ingenious modern-day fable for adults and teenagers. This easy-to-read book is filled with witty humor, and already changing lives - for the better!
Follow the adventures of Lucky the rat who is sent into the African bush by Lion on a quest to find out what makes others happy. Lion hopes to regain his own happiness by learning from others.
Amongst others, Lucky stumbles across Elephant, who practiced homeopathy but faced a crisis after losing his tusks in a fight with another bull over the matriarg-in-waiting.
Without his tusks he could no longer peel bark from trees, or dig up roots needed to make his medicine. His practice deteriorated and eventually Elephant had to close the doors of his practice.
Elephant shares how this crisis presented him with new opportunities.
Lucky also meets Baobab tree who is into carbon credit trading. Baobab wanted to be the first tree to see what lies outside of the valley where he lived.
Baobab thought this would make him smarter and so earn the respect of other trees in the valley. Baobab essentially believed he would be happy once he was tall enough to see outside of the valley.
In pursuit of this goal, Baobab absorbed his minerals six times a day and took deep breaths of carbon dioxide whenever animals were around. He pushed his roots down to where no tree has ever gone in search of water.
Once Baobab was able to see outside the valley, the permanent state of happiness that he hoped for did not materialize. He realized that he missed out on happiness along the way, while being fixated on his goal.
Baobab missed his saplings growing up. He missed the day they broke ground and the day they got their first leaves. He was deaf to the sound of their laughter when the ants tickled their bark.
Lucky also encounters Buffalo, a market analyst who was retrenched following the economic crisis of 2008. Buffalo was contracted by swallows to analyse data they collected on humans in an effort to develop a strategy to counter the human onslaught on nature.
Buffalo analysed human spending habits and derived a curve that proves that money cannot buy happiness.
Through Lucky's encounters with many more colorful characters, readers will see how to make happiness happen for themselves and for those around them!
