Instead, they spend an average of 7 hours a day on screens indoors. Yet nature is an essential element for healthy growth. Not only does exposure to nature help relieve stress, depression, and attention deficits, it reduces bullying, helps combat sickness, and boosts academic scores. Even more important are the long-term benefits linked to cognitive, emotional, and moral development.View Details »
An increasing awareness of this crisis has given rise to a children and nature movement. But parents—many of whom are themselves intimidated by nature—still don't know how to go about helping their children connect with nature. Distilling the latest research in disciplines such as psychology, neuroscience, biology, and education, Sampson reveals how parents and educators can help kids fall in love with nature—enlisting technology as an ally; taking advantage of nearby, even urban, locations; and instilling a sense of place that will help keep the planet healthy. This essential connection benefits us all by creating healthier and happier children and adults. When Star received his powers on his first birthday, he became the most powerful pegasus in Anok. However, many were afraid to follow him and felt safer staying with their over-stallions. The rest unified with Star and formed River Herd.
But now a horrible plague threatens the five herds, and the heartless over-stallion Rockwing of the Mountain Herd has plans to kidnap Morningleaf, Star's closest companion, and take back Sky Meadow. Star begins to question his ability to keep his herd safe, especially with the threat of Nightwing the Destroyer's return—the pegasus who inherited the starfire before Star and used it for evil. As much as Star wants to rely on his friends again for support, he's afraid of the starfire he's inherited. Star can heal, but he can also destroy. And the question is: Will his dark powers overcome him?

Steve Ruby’s father has passed away and his mother finds it vexing to raise the mischievous experimenter. Steve must now figure out how to deal with all the weird characters surrounding him. Against the cruel and vicious Mrs. Badger, he retaliates with a nickname, and it provokes her so much that her fists clench tight, her body shakes, and her face glows cherry red. Even the vein on her forehead pops out and beams like an emergency light on top of a police cruiser. The neighborhood is teaming with eccentrics with whom he must battle.
Steve’s goal in life is to become an inventor. He is fascinated by gadgets and gizmos: whether big or small, new or old, safe or perilous. His older sister, Katie, is his friend in peace and ally in battle. But even she can’t protect him from his worst enemy: himself. He is far too inquisitive and unpredictable for the adults who constantly worry whether he just might accidentally incinerate the house or inadvertently blow up the dog. To tell the truth, he’s never actually exploded anything or maimed anyone. Then again, he’s only eight. So, there’s lots of time left for being a holy terror. Looks like the road ahead’s going to be rough. [close]

Warm smiles. Cold shoulders. Itchy feet. We're always talking--with our words and through our actions. Sometimes we convey these messages through gestures, such as nodding our heads in agreement or raising our arms in victory. Other times, our faces give us away, revealing underlying joy, anger, fear, sorrow or surprise. Even our postures, the way we walk, and the amount of personal space we put between ourselves and others tell stories.
Start the New Year with more social aplomb and let EVERY BODY'S TALKING help you decode this not-so-hidden language! [close]

This is a historical fiction middle reader adventure series for kids aged 9 - 12.
The first two books, Rebels of the Kasbah and Wrath of the Caid, are sweeping through libraries and schools and being included in Battle of the Book contests around the country.
We're also giving away a galley of the third book, Legends of the Rif, due for publication in March, 2015.
The books are meant to be read in chronological order.
These books are not fantasy. They don't have vampires, zombies, or an apocalyptic theme. They are not science fiction.
These are good old fashioned adventures set in 1912 and span the globe. Many readers state the books remind them of Raiders of the Lost Arc, the Tintin Adventures, or Rudyard Kipling novels.
Please, if you enter, have the books demographics and content in mind. We've had too many adult readers enter in the past who have no interest in a historical fiction middle reader series.
A great resource on the series is available at our web site at www.redhandadventures.com. [close]

Suddenly, a big opportunity comes her way, but she needs a team to help her.
Emma will have to make friends in order to take on the task.
Will Emma find the courage she needs to overcome her fears?
Outside The Circle is a middle-grade fiction children’s chapter book. I wrote this book with my eight-year old-daughter. The emphasis was on fears kids have at school, and this one centered around recess; one of the few times in the day where a kid can feel completely outnumbered.
Many subjects that are touched upon in this book include bullying, courage, friendship, fear, communication, reading directions, problem-solving, teamwork, the importance of family, understanding the needs of the elderly, cultural diversity, and alternative energy!
That may sound like a lot to put in a book, but if you really think about how much information a child observes in just a year, its not really that shocking at all. This book was an inspiration for me, because it allowed me to really bond with my daughter and see the world through her eyes.
This is a great read for kids ages 7-10 and it’s a great way for parents to open the lines of communication with their child about the things they might be experiencing at school.

Do all moms really have X-ray vision and eyes in the back of their heads? Author Christina Scalise’s kids think so. And the New York author isn’t above using her maternal superpowers to deal with the challenges of childrearing. How else could she accomplish such seemingly impossible feats as getting three kids to try brussels sprouts for the first time?
Scalise may not actually be more powerful than a locomotive, but she’s able to get her family to hang the toilet paper in the “over” position—most of the time, anyway.
And she may not be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, but if her kids accidentally leave their dirty clothes on the floor, they know their wayward apparel could likely end up dangling from the nearby treetops, faster than a speeding bullet.
“Life is way too short,” says Scalise, “so try to enjoy every minute of it with a sense of humor!
With that kind of outlook on life’s crazy moments, Scalise and her family have often been left asking themselves one recurring question, which became the title of her new book: “Are We Normal?”
Scalise shares some key parenting lessons learned the hard way, such as what happens when a preschooler finds himself alone with a VCR, a broomstick, and a peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich.
“I originally started writing this book as a journal of stories for my kids to read when they were older and had children of their own—a few funny stories they could tell our future grandchildren about,” she says. “Then it grew from there, with one story after another.
After a while I figured, ‘Why not share our stories with the rest of the world? I’m sure most people can relate to at least one or more of these stories. And if not—well, I hope readers at least get a good laugh out of them.’

When forced to choose between staying with her guardian and being with her big brother, Ari chose her big brother. There’s just one problem—Gage doesn’t actually have a place to live.
When Ari’s mother died four years ago, she had two final wishes: that Ari and her older brother, Gage, would stay together always, and that Ari would go to Carter, the middle school for gifted students. So when nineteen-year-old Gage decides he can no longer live with their bossy guardian, Janna, Ari knows she has to go with him. But it’s been two months, and Gage still hasn’t found them an apartment. He and Ari have been "couch surfing," staying with Gage’s friend in a tiny apartment, crashing with Gage’s girlfriend and two roommates, and if necessary, sneaking into a juvenile shelter to escape the cold Maine nights. But all of this jumping around makes it hard for Ari to keep up with her schoolwork, never mind her friendships, and getting into Carter starts to seem impossible. Will Ari be forced to break one of her promises to Mama? Told in an open, authentic voice, this nuanced story of hiding in plain sight may have readers thinking about homelessness in a whole new way. Jeff Browning has been haunted by terrifying dreams since the mysterious disappearance of his father (a renowned physicist). But when he finds a portal in his father’s office, he must overcome his fears in an attempt to find him.
The portal takes him to another dimension – one populated by fantastic and dangerous creatures and also an advanced society of humans.
As Jeff looks for clues regarding what may have happened to his father, he is accused by some of being a spy while thought by others to be a prophesized figure . . . who may be the key to victory in a developing war.
