Milek and his big brother Munio live in a sleepy village in Poland. One of their neighbors, Anton, is a poor, illiterate man who won't eat meat but regularly feeds the flies. While the rest of the town makes fun of him, the boys' mother is kind to Anton, often sending her reluctant sons with food and clothing for the "village fool" whom no one respects.

When war comes to their country, everything changes. The Nazi soldiers march into the village and begin rounding up Jewish boys. Anton, worried about Milek and Munio and their family, comes up with a plan to keep them, and two other young women, safe.

The illustrated narrative is followed by a section, "What Happened After", which includes photographs.
