Inspired by the Upanishads ancient poems tha…more
Inspired by the Upanishads ancient poems that teach pure awareness, this unique book speaks directly to the heart and soul of every reader, revealing a beautiful vision of a perfect world. A love story that transcends all time and space and the illusion of separation, told in simple lyrical style with dazzling illustrations.
This gentle tale weaves together a world of unity where opposites play together in a deep absorption of what is real and what is illusory. Told in four parts: The First Awakening, The Sleeping, The Dreaming and The Reawakening, The Garden mirrors the Upanishads Three States and One Reality: Waking to an outside world, Dreaming in the mind, Dissolving in deep sleep and Awakening to pure awareness.
The condensed narrative contains deeper meanings so designed that each reader needs to think about the words through a sustained process of inner reflection. Each reader will discover many different levels of meaning and this will lead to their own individual "awakening" in The Garden.
The Garden is a parable about the origin of life that gently opens the heart, allowing the reader to experience oneness: a self-realization where feelings, thoughts and perceptions are seen as the ever-changing appearances of awareness itself. Enlightenment is simply the art of being. The art of love. An openness, where everything and nothing are one. The cup and water, though not joined together, they are one. We are all connected to the origin of life. The boundless all. The clear state of being awake. The invisible source of being. Inside us there is peace and happiness. It is our home.
So journey into life, journey into the fullness and perfect presence of oneness and see the wonderful miracle that you already are.
"It is the beautiful illustrations of sacred geometry woven into Celtic patterns and nature's gifts that makes this little book really special. The reader is taken through a love story of the soul and I could not help but think of that other great poem of love by Khalil Gibran, The Garden of The Prophet, as I read through these pages. This is a book to languish over in the quiet of your mind and can be used as an excellent tool for inspiration, illumination and opening of the heart." -- Elizabeth Peru, Insight Publishing

While working the floor at the casino on the ultra-rural Yukemaya Indian Reservation, Alice is visited by a mysterious woman. Alice wants to believe her new epilepsy meds are causing her to hallucinate, but the apparition keeps coming back with terrifying information about the reservation’s secret history.
Pemberton, a hard-partying copywriter from L.A. who was kicked out of his apartment by his fiancé, is having a difficult time adjusting to life on the rez. His new boss at the casino has severe anger-management issues, his drinking is getting out of control, and he’s attracted the attention of a drug-addled biker.
Lupita is no stranger to casinos, but she’s never seen anything like this: a slot machine that compels people to keep playing until they’ve lost everything. Lupita’s been on been on bad runs before, but this machine is different. This one is evil.
As the three of them come to terms with the ways in which they are haunted by the past and struggle to turn their luck around, they must confront the malevolent force at Thunderclap that won’t rest until old wrongs have been made right.
“Forest of Fortune captures the soul and voice of hard-luck, hard-living Americans in a way that conjures up earlier masters like Raymond Carver and Richard Ford. Jim Ruland has an uncanny ability to get inside his characters – the small-time gamblers, washed up ad-men, and ladies of a certain age with a taste for one-armed bandits who people the casino at the center of the novel, the aptly named ‘Thunderclap.’ It’s been a long time since I’ve read an author with this much heart and talent. I really loved this book.”
–Jerry Stahl, author of Happy Mutant Baby Pills and Permanent Midnight
“A little spooky, very funny, and thoroughly engrossing from start to finish. Ruland writes with real aplomb and takes no prisoners.”
—Fiona Maazel, author of Woke Up Lonely
“Jim Ruland’s debut novel Forest of Fortune celebrates casino luck, mostly bad. A tour de force about a casino’s back rooms and environs, Forest of Fortune delivers on the seductive hardboiled territory of dread and despair. I’d bet plenty that you’ll like this.”

No matter how far or fast I run, some things are inescapable. My past is one of them. After everything that happened, I thought I was done. Then Nick called, and all hell broke loose.
Alexis Parker has been a lot of things, from a federal agent to a corporate security analyst. After finally admitting that working with law enforcement would lead to an untimely death, she hung up her holster, but corporate work is tedious and mind-numbingly boring. The federal agent instinct is just too deeply ingrained, and now it’s her only possible saving grace.
While away at a business conference, Alex receives word that Detective Nick O’Connell was shot and his niece was kidnapped. Racing back to the life she thought she escaped, Alex finds herself tossed into a sea of vigilante justice. Since the police department is unaware of the current circumstances and time is running out, the rules of the game have dramatically changed. The kidnappers demand two million dollars and expect payment in forty-eight hours. Clearly, that’s not an option, and Alex is forced to creatively color outside the lines.
As she investigates, she discovers that three seven year olds were abducted, but only one of the girls has been returned safely. Forced to work with a questionable ex-SAS operative whose business card now reads K&R specialist, Alex must fight off her own demons and come to terms with who she is and exactly what she’s capable of doing. There are no holds barred when it comes to rescuing innocent children, but after some lines are crossed, the damage can never be undone.
