The Pullman books are great - I read them years ago before they got hyped without knowing anything at all about them and wondering why I'd been recommended some kids books by a friend. That's my favourite way to find something really good, the same thing happened with Trainspotting which I almost put down in initial frustration with the phonetic Scottish dialect.
