Hey, thanks for the comment and insight. My friend has been telling me a lot about the book. I really want to read it now.

Maybe if they have the book in Korean I could use it in the future if I am teaching in Korea and teaching a high school class.

94 Well we are back with an action packed start of the second half of this season. Great episode in my view. And apparently A LOT of literature references in this one. More than I first picked up on:

1) The most apparent is the title of the episode based on H.G. Wells work of science fiction that is supposed be a work History from the future (1933-2106. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shape_o...

2) Ben checks into the hotel under the assumed name "Dean Moriarty" the hero from Jack Kerouac's book "On the Road"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_the_Road...

3) Sawyer mentions the children's story "Chicken Little" to Hurley.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sky_Is_...

4) Movie/book reference when Ben enters to check into the hotel it is very similar to the film Lawrence of Arabia. (Book: "Seven Pillars of Wisdom") http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_of...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Pilla...

5) This one may be a stretch but Ben's use of the expandable club a homage to Agent 355 in Graphic Novel/Comic Y:The Last Man. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y:_The_Last...

6) Doctor Kendrick is the name of the MD the book "The Time Traveller's Wife" by Audrey Niffenegger. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Time_Tr...

So I am not familiar with these books. Anyone read any of these and share any insight of the books and the show or episode in particular???

424 Sounds good. I am ordering the book (I should have it by next week).

However, I have downloaded an e-version to get a little jump start to the reading. If anyone is interested I found a great program and website to download books. If you are like me you like to highlight and write notes in the margin's of books. If you do this program is great:

http://www.ereader.com/ereader/software/...

The basic software is free and works really well. Kindle could learn from it.

Now download the book here:
http://manybooks.net/authors/chestert.ht...

Select a title, on the right download it in EReader form and open it in ereader. You can highlight, write notes about a section, and do some other things.

424 I'd be up for this too. I just ordered some stuff from Amazon, but I was planning on ordering somethinge else. I'm sure I can get a used copy cheap for both. I have Orthodoxy in mp3 format (free from Christianaudio.com) on my Zune ready to be listened to as well. So Heretics first sounds great to me. I'll try to put in an order for it on Amazon ASAP.

424 I use a variety of ways, tools and resources for my (quiet time, Bible study, devotional). However, primarily and consistently I have been going through a book called "On Living Simply" that is various readings of sermons by John Chrysostom. It has made me think a lot and drove me to the scriptures to find references to the subjects he touches upon. Good stuff.

I've been doing an indepth inductive study of Colossians (it seems forever) and I just started a personal systematic study on the subject of the Perspecuity of Scripture.

424 This is my first stab at Eco's work. I picked this book particularly because of my unheatlhy fascination with a little tv show called LOST (see my other group). :) Good story so far. I have seen the movie "Name of the Rose" but not read the book. I liked the movie.

I'm not a full MDiv student, but a M.A. major in the Divnity School. M.A. in English Bible (essentially focused on Bible understanding and teaching-I'm taking it online).

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome and comments.

424 Mostly Church history as I'm taking a Church History course through seminary. Main book is Roger Olsens "The Story of Christian Theology." On the fiction side I'm working my way through Umberto Echo's "The Island of the Day Before." Those are the two of 5 or 6 off the top of my head. :)

424 Hi,

I'm not a practicing Anglican, but I was Baptised in the Episcopal church as a child. I'm more of the non-denominational type. However, I appreciate the Anglican faith for what it brings to Protestantism and to the body of Christ. So am I cool to be iin this group?

94 Emilia,

Welcome! Some pretty cool links there. I have scanned all of them a little. I will go back and look some more. Thanks!

We are also open to some more books on the bookshelf. I want to this groups bookshelf to be wiki like where anyone can add. I just request that at least some reasoning based on the show is behind it. of course. I usually try to post on the books profile site (once it is offically on this groups bookshelf) a thread about why the book is part of this group. We also have shelf for fans to post books they would associate with the show, but has not been on the show or mentioned indirectly on the show.

Welcome to the group and we are very happy to have someone so passionate about the books of lost. I'll be checking out your blog as well.

94 I thought I would make an official thread for this one. Sorry I haven't kept up with this. I have been busy with school and blogging a lot. lol.

Well as everyone has pointed out already (and this book has already been mentioned through another episode) the game show mentioned The Slaughter House Five (Kurt Vonnegut) as an answer to a question.

However, there was also the mention of Michael acting like Jack Nicholson's charcter in the Shining (slamming the ball against the wall). Of course that is based on Stephen King's book "The Shining." The writers of course big SK fans. I don't remember if that scene so famous in the movie is in the book. It has been a long time since I read the book.

94 Hey group. A member Ryan has made an interesting discovery. In the "Welcome" thread he talks about finding a mention of "The Tempest" in "A Wrinkle in Time" and "Watership Down" is mentioned in "The Stand."

So I was wondering. Have any of you noticed certian novels mentioned within the novels connected to the show? Any connection?

For me, I know in "Bad Twin" they mention Dante's "Divine Comedy," "The Great Gatsby," "A River Runs Through It," "Gilgamesh," and "Beowulf." I'll have to think about the other novels I have read.

Does anyone else have a novel within a "LOST novel?"
Mar 18, 2008 09:55PM

94 Hey Ryan,

Welcome! wow. that is a very astute observation there. Thank you for pointing that out. Now I will have to think back to the few books I have read and see. I think I'll actually start a thread on this. A great idea.

-Ted,

94 Sandra welcome!!! Wow, you are committed. Of all the books I think most Losties may avoid it is that of BHT. lol. I have seen a documentary on that book and it was interesting, but also complicated. Cosmology is not the easiest thing to wrap one's brain around. We all look forward to your insights on Lost and the books associated with it. :)

94 I found this new book that seems to similar on some level to show. I thought some of you might be interested in putting it on your Amazon "wish list" (it's on mine) or on a "to read" list.

http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20182593...

http://www.amazon.com/Philosophers-Appre...

I will put it on the bookshelf as a "fan selection."
Mar 18, 2008 01:17PM

94 Thanks "That_evening" for posting that book. I have been focused on other things and only had a chance to add the books on the bookshelf and not in an actual thread. I didn't mean to take so long.

There are actually two other books (from the help of LOSTpedia):

http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Captain_Ga...

The Captin's name "Gault" can be associated with two possible literary works:

Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" character John Galt who makes a huge speech in the book that encompases issues of metaphysics, epistomology, ethics and politics.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlas_Shrug...

or/and

Captin Gault a fictional character created by english writer William Hope Hodgson who is a Captin for hire who has knowledge in various subjects to smuggle goods. He is a mysterious caption and each story reveals something new about him.

12985 The Power station is named Tempest. The play has many similar aspects to the show.

94 I didn't see any books specifically. The book Ben is reading I think is the previous book (can anyone confirm that?).

However, the Power Station is called "Tempest." I think this is an indirect nod toward the Shakespear play. I am so surprised I don't know too much about this play. It seems like a fascinating play.

Here is an interesting discussion of the play on the Fuselage:

So did I miss anything book wise? Other than the book. What did you think of the episode? Anything remind you of any other books. Thoughts in general?

18131 This book shows up in episode 19 of the first season as one of the books Sawyer is seen reading.

This has elements of travel through time to find their father. Time and "daddy issues" being two large elements within LOST.
