You'll have to tell me what you think and how helpful this is. Always thinking I need to figure my life direction out.
Interesting. I've tried reading other Coetzee and just couldn't get into it at all. Your review provides some context. Thanks for being so detailed!

I think you'd really enjoy this since you like interior monologue. It was really interesting - super quick read.
I just really love her voice -- it's so different. It was like reading a series of anecdotes about history and her passion for the subject was so evident. Her voice is unlike any other. She does digress, so I can see this not being for everyone, but I learned more about the Lincoln, Garfield & McKinley than I ever expected. I actually ordered two of her other books from the library I enjoyed this one so much.
we read this for a book club and it was just not that great of a read. it was definitely put in the giveaway pile straight after reading.
ha! i can see tess pushing your buttons on this. but it is a story that sucks you in. especially the no toys part -- the corncob doll about kills me!
yeah, we read this last year and i noticed the same thing. but it gave me an opportunity to talk to the kids about changing social mores. they were equally horrified by the graphic descriptions of how meat is butchered. it's not the same thing, but this book is a reflection of the times.
what i found disappointing was that these books were so magical to me as a child, but as an adult, you realize that these were not all that well-written. still, provide a glimpse into that pioneer life, from a female perspective.
I SO would do that Corey! Maybe we should do as one of the book club things? We could read another magical realism book, because I'm sure most people would have read this.Love seeing all your books, we have very similar taste.
