Hail Caesar, Twisted, Shark Life, Pieces to Weight, Tyrell, Black and White, Paranoid Park, The Rules of Survival, Born to Rock, Inexcusable, King Dork. all books that you would enjoy as well as 12th grade males. (and since you are working in your high school library ... you do plan to become a librarian, right?) for more, look through this list: http://www.ala.org/ala/yalsa/booklistsaw...
I'm totally stealing faves from others posts for my first few, but here's my list: On Writing by Stephen King is definitely up there, Maus I and II, Running with Scissors, Girl Interrupted and Stone Butch Blues.
I'd try to hook him on a series... goosebumps is forever popular. Lemony Snickett is great for humor and really any graphic novel series is going to be a great way to gain a hungry thirst for more. manga is particularly popular with video game fans. one more suggestion, have the librarian help him browse the children's nonfiction and choose stuff based on his interests. also, why not let him feed into his video game interest by reading nonfiction and magazines on that topic? your local children's librarian can help you find stuff on gaming that is age appropriate.
good luck!!!
alas, it's still misplaced and I really just want to get back in bed to read it right now. might be in my locker at work. or mixed in with my stacks of books here. hmmmm.
good story. I got to sit next to MT Anderson during a YA author breakfast and it was very obvious that he's antisocial. and I hadn't read Octavian Nothing and so I wasn't able to contribute to the conversation much.
you groped his shoulder? have you read I am the Messenger? I LOVE that one. can't wait for more from him...
awesome review!!! I always buy the red edition at used book stores so that I have ample copies to give away.
I'm still reading it (misplaced it for now) but yes it's an arc and I'll mail it to you if you want.
