31toe5p6xcl it's a quick pick nom and once I got through to the climax I was totally hooked but... because of the fact that it was so slow at first, I don't think it's gonna fly with reluctant readers.

1112 I'd also add to this growing list a few graphic novels. The Bone series is very popular with this age group as is The Diary of a Wimpy Kid which is now a series as well. Manga rated 10+ or Youth would also be a sure fire hit as well. Go to Tokyo Pop or Viz Media and search by age range.

3551 I suggest Copper Sun. It's a recent award winner and it has so much to discuss.

btw, Boy in Striped Pajamas is interesting but most agree after reading it that, that it's better suited to a younger age. It'a more a fable than historic fiction.
