I loved the cover of this book, liked two stories a lot, and thought the rest were ok. We read it for Chat & Chew, the high school book club at the library and although none of us liked it very much we had a great time discussing what made it bad and how it could have been better.
Lauren I read this book in 8th or 9th grade (I can't remember now), but I loved it! I am a big fan of dystopias (utopias, aka perfect worlds, gone wrong). How would societies develop under various different situations.
You ARE NOT alone.
There is a companion/prequel coming out...I have an advanced copy that you can borrow when you come home over the summer. I also have tattoos!
Unlike you I read very few manga, but this was assigned to me for a committe and I was pleasantly surprised. I liked the concept, characters, and art. We don't own it, but it can be requested from other BCCLS libraries.

Story of a Girl is by Sara Zarr. She also wrote Sweethearts. Same Difference will be out in March, I got an early copy. It is by the author of A Little Friendly Advice.
It is soooo good so far, but I need to do Christmas shopping, cards, etc...Looking forward to seeing you in Dec!
