Martel's obviously a very gifted storyteller, but the fable aspect to me was kind of precious, boring and simplistic rather than the purported change the way you think about God, ultimate deep theme-thing. It just didn't make me think in the way that I wanted it to. It was a fun read, but it left me saying meh, somehow. You know, I could probably actually give it three stars -- my lower rating is probably my inherent reaction to reading it after hearing all the hype. Unrealistic expectations breed bad reviews? Maybe.
