Our public computers used to be a nightmare! We have 11 computers that serve an area of 30,000 people -- many of whom are out of work, don't speak English, or have limited computer skills. We were constantly overwhelmed with people upset about kids using computers for myspace when they have a job application to fill out or whatever. Our library system finally recognized that this was a huge stress on front-line staff and passed some pretty good guidelines. 1. Customers need a library card to use the computers (internet access is now treated like access to the rest of the collection) 2. Time limits are restricted to a total of 2 hours per day -- this is tracked with the library card number, and sessions are 30 min or 1 hr.
We also have security guards in our branches, so it hasn't been such a huge issue for staff getting into problems with angry customers.
This has been on my "to-read" list forever! I can't wait for your review -- usually that will bump a book closer to the top of the list :-)
By the way, _Fablehaven_ was good; I'm on hold for the second book.
hmmm...should i finish Eclipse tonight or start this book... decisions, decisions.
Thanks for the update on this one :-)
Funny story about this book... my dad was reading this one, and he left it on the plane. He went to the gate to ask about it, and the airline employee asked for the title. He said everyone around him looked away sheepishly, and the employee gave him a disgusted look. He thought it was so funny to see their reactions :-) I guess you can't tell a book by its title!
You'll have to let me know if this is a good one :-) I was just talking to Quinton about my days at camp!
I keep seeing that one on the shelf at my branch. Your 5 stars have pushed me over the edge to check it out!
This was a great book -- action, adventure, quest, friendship, family, romance -- what more could you possibly want in a book?
This was a deeply inspirational read. I loved it! I wanted to drive out to the farm and give birth to my babies.
This series is so great! I recommend it all the time :-) I didn't think I'd like it, but I loved it, and got hooked on the series.
He's a great YA author.
I haven't read any of the other selections; we just moved to Denver this year. I'm just about finished with this one, but I'm not *loving* it... I'm a librarian at Denver Public Library, so I'll have to finish it, so I can host a book discussion at my branch. I'm excited to meet the author too, sometimes that helps me get through a book that I'm not totally loving.
We just got this in our new book bin at my branch. Lucia is so into being "Lucia the Lion", this was a perfect book to take home to her :-)
Do you have a commute to work? Lots of teen books are on audio. I get a lot of my teen and j fiction "reading" done in the car.
I really think it's important to get familiar with the books that the teens in your library like. I'm reading a lot more "urban fiction" now, because that's what my teens like. My last library had a lot of Christian fiction, chick lit, and long epic fantasy books.
My favorites are Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, Life as We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer, Fat Kid Rules the World by K.L. Going, the Uglies trilogy by Scott Westerfeld, and the Georgia Nicholson series by Louise Rennison.
I also loved the Book Thief by Markus Zusak and the Giver by Lowry. I recommend Son of the Mob to lots of kids :-)
I love teen books!
I liked Twisted, but I really think a better story in the same vein is Inexcusable by Chris Lynch. He really has a grasp on the teenage male mind and actions.
I need to read this. You'll have to let me know when the author events start happening at WLD. I'd love to come and meet SeƱor Anaya!
