188 Yep, The Lorax is a good one.

A couple of other good picture books are The Tree, by Dana Lyons, which deals with deforestation and has some truly beautiful illustrations, and Little Yellow Pear Tomatoes, by Demian Elaine Yumei, which teaches about all the different things that go into growing one tomato.

188 If your six-year-old is a girl, you could try reading her the Baby-Sitters Little Sister books by Ann M. Martin. The narrator is an eight-year-old girl who is very proud of the fact that she has two houses, two mommies, two daddies, two pairs of glasses, etc. She explains all of this at the start of every book, but it's not the main focus, so you get the sense that having divorced parents isn't a huge deal for her.

188 Am I a Color Too? (by Heidi Cole and Nancy Vogl) is a great picture book about a mixed-race boy trying to understand the labels placed on him and others because of their race. It also happens to be illustrated by the same guy who did the cover art for the Bluford Series that was recommended up-thread.

Groups_nophoto-50x66 The picture book publisher I work for has a terrific book for new dads and their children to read together: Your Father Forever, by Travis Griffith.

188 For kindergarteners, two books I'd suggest for read-alouds are Roonie B. Moonie: Lost and Alone & The Way I Feel, both by Janan Cain. Both are really great for helping kids understand and put words to their feelings.

For older kids, I have very fond memories of my 6th grade teacher reading The Giver by Lois Lowry to us. That's one classic that everyone should read.

Groups_nophoto-50x66 Hi, I'm Kelsey, an editor for a small independent children's book publisher (Illumination Arts Publishing, for those who are interested). Though I work with picture books, my favorite kids book--and actually one of my all-time favorites--is The Wind in the Willows, by Kenneth Grahame. Not having any kids of my own just yet, children's books are something of a guilty pleasure for me.

668 I loved "Good Dog Carl" by Alexandra Day when I was a kid. I always got a big kick out of getting to make up a story to go along with the pictures.

"The Snowman" is also fantastic.
